C&CZ manages a large number of machines that anybody with an Science-account can use. Students can also login to the PC's in the computer labs, the study landscape and the library with their S-number and RU-password, in the RU-domain on MS-Windows. Almost all computer labs are dual-boot: during startup of the PC one can choose to boot Linux (Fedora) or Windows-XP.
Available computer labs
The Science Faculty provides the following computer labs:
- TK023, (HG00.023)
41 Managed PC's (Core 2 Duo, 2.33/2.6Ghz, 2GB, 24" LCD monitor, sound), dual boot with Windows-XP and Linux (Fedora).
The teacher-PC is not yet connected to a beamer, which makes it possible in near future, to project the computer screen on the wall.
- TK029, (HG00.029)
61 Managed PC's (Core 2 Duo 2.80GHz, 2GB, 19" wide-screen LCD monitor, sound), dual-boot with Windows-XP and Linux (Fedora).
The teacher-PC is connected to a beamer, which makes it possible to project the computer screen on the wall.
- TK075, (HG00.075)
65 Managed PC's (Pentium IV, 3.0Ghz, 1GB, 17" or 24" wide-screen LCD monitor) with Windows-XP.
- TK149, (HG00.149)

19 Managed PC's (Core 2 Duo, 2.80GHz, 2GB, 19" wide-screen LCD monitor, sound), dual-boot with Windows-XP and Linux (Fedora).
Study landscape, Library of Science and Central Street
The Science faculty has a Study landscape (HG00.201, access through the Science Library HG00.011) where you can study and e.g. connect a privately owned laptop to the faculty wired network. There is a collection of study books of all disciplines. The books can be used freely but cannot be borrowed. There is also a special copier for books available and a black and white laserprinter. The small siderooms (HG00.206, HG00.209, HG00.212 en HG00.215) can be used by employees or students for meetings, etc. Reservation of these rooms can be made at the 'doorman' of the study landscape. There are simple PC's available in these siderooms.
- Study landscape (HG00.201)
42 Managed PC's (Core 2 Duo, 2.93Ghz, 2GB, 19" LCD monitor, sound) with Windows-XP, an increasing number is dual-boot with Linux (Fedora).
- Self study rooms (HG00.206, HG00.209, HG00.212 and HG00.215)
4 times 2 older Managed PC's with Windows-XP.
- Library of Science
8 group-usable Managed PC's in HG00.011 and 21 quiet-room Managed PC's in the reading room, also accessible by non-Science users, e.g. all RU-students with s-number. The difference with other pc's is that these are owned by the Library of Science. Also the front desk of the Library of Science can supply logins for a day to non-Science employees showing identification.
- Central street (in column front of Library HG00.011)
4 Managed PC's to lookup information fast, also by non-Science users, e.g. all RU-students with s-number.
PC-room near Mathematics
Sometimes it happens that a department has a PC-room that also could be used by others. Because C&CZ is not responsible for the purchase/replacement of these PC's, we cannot guarantee that the information below is up-to-date:
- HG03.761, (near Mathematics department, property of IMAPP, no reservation possible)
ca. 16 Managed PC's (most of them: Pentium IV, 3.0Ghz, 1GB, 17" LCD monitor, sound), dual boot with Windows-XP en Linux (Fedora).
Just like collegezalen or colloquiumkamers, computer labs can be reserved for courses. One should consider the follwing:
- Reservation of the computer lab.
- Admittance to computer labs is arranged by an admittance procedure.
- All students in a course must have an Account.
- Installed software. Besides MS Windows with MS Office or Linux with Open Office, a lot of extra software is always available on the PC's in the computer labs. See: Windows applications, Linux applications.
- Additional software for courses must be installed by the system management of C&CZ.
It is not possible to get Administrative- or Power User privileges for installing additional software or running problematic programs.
- Especially new software for the computer labs should be requested at the earliest possible moment (at least two weeks in advance).
This is needed because system management must figure out if the software can run using ordinary user privileges, to package the software and finally to distribute the package to the PC's in the requested computer lab(s). It has happened that certain software could not be used because of security and maintainability reasons, an alternative software package had to be found, packaged, installed and used during the course.
If a computer lab is not reserved for a course, anybody with an account can use any of the PC's available.
Computer lab usage
The usage of the computer labs is monitored at computer lab usage. Because of technical reasons the usage of the GIS PC lab (HG02.702) and the siderooms of the Studielandschap is not registered.
Behaviour in the labs
It is not allowed to smoke, eat or drink in the computer labs, this is to protect the equipment. Do not cause annoyances to other users, like disturbing sounds, long term screen lock, ...). Also there is a priority to use a PC: highest priority has the course that has reserved the computer lab, next are employees or students working on courses, essays and reports.
