Study area, Library of Science and Central Street

The Science faculty has a Study area (HG00.201, access through the Science Library HG00.011) where you can study and e.g. connect a privately owned laptop to the faculty wired network. The project rooms (HG00.208 to HG00.218a) can be used by employees or students for meetings, etc. Reservation of these rooms can be made at the 'doorman' of the study area. There are PCs available in these project rooms. You can also find some flex workplace PCs here.

All managed All-in-One computers in these areas are provided with dual boot Windows and Linux (Ubuntu) and have the following specifications: Core i5-3470, 3.2Ghz, 8GB, 23" LCD monitor, sound.

  • Study area (HG00.201): 70 PCs
  • Project rooms (HG00.208, HG00.209, HG00.210, HG00.211, HG00.212, HG00.213, HG00.214, HG00.215, HG00.216): 2 PCs in each room
  • Large project rooms (HG00.217, HG00.217a, HG00.218, HG00.218a): 1 PC in each room
  • Flex workplaces (HG00.018, Library of Science): 3 PCs
  • Library of Science (HG00.019): 8 group-usable PCs
  • Library of Science (HG00.401): 21 PCs
  • Central street (in a column in front of the Library HG00.011): 4 info PCs

Non-Faculty of Science employees can obtain a login-account for one day at the Library of Science desk upon showing an identification.

Reservation

Just like collegezalen or colloquiumkamers, computer labs can be reserved for courses. One should consider the follwing:

  • Reservation of the computer lab.

To make a reservation, get in contact with Zaalreservering, department IHZ (Interne en Huishoudelijke Zaken), room HG00.040, telefoon 52010. N.B.: This is only for the reservation of the computer lab.

  • Admittance to computer labs is arranged by an admittance procedure.
  • All students in a course must have an Account.
  • Installed software. Besides MS Windows with MS Office or Linux with Open Office, a lot of extra software is always available on the PC's in the computer labs. See: Windows applications, Linux applications.
  • Additional software for courses must be installed by the system management of C&CZ.
It is not possible to get Administrative- or Power User privileges for installing additional software or running problematic programs.
  • Especially new software for the computer labs should be requested at the earliest possible moment (at least two weeks in advance).
This is needed because system management must figure out if the software can run using ordinary user privileges, to package the software and finally to distribute the package to the PC's in the requested computer lab(s). It has happened that certain software could not be used because of security and maintainability reasons, an alternative software package had to be found, packaged, installed and used during the course.

If a computer lab is not reserved for a course, anybody with an account can use any of the PC's available.

Computer lab usage

The usage of the computer labs is monitored at computer lab usage.

Behaviour in the labs

It is not allowed to smoke, eat or drink in the computer labs, this is to protect the equipment. Do not cause annoyances to other users, like disturbing sounds, long term screen lock, ...). Also there is a priority to use a PC: highest priority has the course that has reserved the computer lab, next are employees or students working on courses, essays and reports.

The login screens of the computer lab PCs accommodate 3 advertisements of 400x280 pixels. These can be submitted to The current advertisements can be viewed here as well
