Throughout the Faculty of Science there are printers that can be used by everybody. These printers are maintained by C&CZ. Practically all of these are Konica Minolta Bizhub multifunctionals which are also used as copiers and color scanners.

C&CZ also offers the possibility to print posters and such on high quality photo paper or canvas on an A0 poster printer.

There are also printers which are owned by a department. In general these printers are meant to be used only by people belonging to that department. The department has purchased the printer and is responsible for paper, supplies and maintenance.

General remarks/warnings

Do not make lots of copies without testing in advance

Sometimes a print is not want you intended: color instead of black-and-white, A4 instead of A3 or vice versa, single instead of double sided or vice versa, smudges or unclear prints, etc. Afterwards you can often tell what went wrong, but the damage has already been done. So if you need to make many copies, first print only one copy and if that produces want you intended, print the rest with the same options and on the same printer.

Do not use a color printer for black-and-white prints of a color document

Printing in black-and-white on a color printer can produce color output. Most of the time (but not always!) this is because selecting Black and White or Grayscale somewhere in the printer options only works if the document itself does not contain any printer settings. In case of a document which is not your own one is never sure of this.

So if you want to be sure that a document is printed in black-and-white (so that the black-and-white price is charged), always use a printer that can only print in black-and-white. Therefore also choose a black-and-white (configured) printer as your default printer.

Proceed as follows to print as standard black-and-white on a Konica Minolta MFP. Click the Windows button, go to "Devices and Printers". Right-click the desired printer and select "Printing Preferences". Go to the "Quality" tab. Set "Select Color" to "Grayscale" and click "Apply".

For all faculty printers (except the A0 poster printer) there is a uniform price per page which depends on the type of output. The costs of a printjob (number of pages x price per page) are automatically deducted from your print budget. You need to have a (positive) print budget.

Beware: even if there is just one single color pixel on a page, the printer will register a color page and your budget will be charged accordingly.

Because of RU uniformity the costs have been changed on Februari 1, 2014, into:

size black-and-white color
A4 € 0,037 € 0,19
A3 € 0,072 € 0,38

Use manual feed to print transparencies and make sure the transparencies are laserprinter proof.

Printing under Windows

ISC managed PC (SWI)

End users on PCs managed by the ISC are advised to follow the procedure for a self managed Windows 7 PC below. If you run into problems please contact ISC for assistance.

Windows 8

You will have to install a local printer driver. It is advisable to download the printer driver and store it in a known location on your PC in advance so it can be used later in step 2.

Start with connecting a network drive from the printer server, this way you will see error messages if something went wrong.

  • Do this by visiting your Desktop.
  • Connecting a network drive can be accomplished by starting a Windows Explorer and selecting the tab Computer and then clicking Map network drive.
  • Select at Drive: e.g. P: and enter at Folder: \\\printtest. Also select Reconnect at sign-in and Connect using different credentials. Click Finish.
  • Enter your science account and password in the Login dialog window. Also select Remember my credentials and click OK.
  • There should appear a Windows Explorer screen with a few files.

Now install the printer using a local port.

  • Do this by initially right clicking on Start -> Control Panel -> Devices and Printers,
  • Choose Add a printer and select The printer that i want isn't listed,
  • Choose Add a local printer or netwerk printer with manual settings. Click Next,
  • Choose Use an existing port: LPT1: (Printer Port). Click Next,
  • Install the correct printer driver,
  • Choose a Printer name:, e.g. pr-hg-00-002. Click Next,
  • Choose Do not share this printer. Click Next and then Finish.

The printer is now in your list of printers. We have to adapt the printer and change the port from LPT1: to the the network printer.

  • Right click on the newly created printer and choose Printer properties.
  • Visit the tab Ports and click op Add Port....
  • Choose Local Port and click on New Port....
  • Enter at Enter a port name: \\\<printernaam> and click OK, Close and again Close.

Verify before printing that you can see and read the files at the network drive \\\printtest. The printer connection \\\ in Add Port... and as well in the the network drive has to be exactly the same. This is needed to create a reliable connectie to the printer server.

Windows 7: Fast installation on a managed PC

  • Open Windows Explorer (windows key + e).
  • Type \\\ in the address bar and hit the return key.
  • Use your science account and password if an authentication window pops up.
  • Double click the printer you'd like to install.

Windows 7: For a self maintained PC

First connect to a network drive from the printer-server, this will show errors if there is something wrong with your login or password. Connecting this network drive can be accomplished in a Windows Explorer window like My Documents. Click on Tools -> Map Network Drive... and choose for the Folder: \\\printtest.

  • Click Start, Devices and Printers, Add a Printer en select Network printer
  • Click The printer that I want isn't listed en enter \\\printername at Select by name
  • Click Next, wait a little and then click Next again
  • To be sure, check if Preferences / Properties are on A4 paperformat

First connect to a network drive from the printer-server, this will show errors if there is something wrong with your login or password. Connecting this network drive can be accomplished in a Windows Explorer window like My Documents. Click on Tools -> Map Network Drive... and choose for the Folder: \\\printtest.

  • Then you can add a new printer using Start -> Settings -> Printers and Faxes, select the printer task Add a printer.
  • Choose A network printer ...,
  • choose Connect to this printer ... and type \\\printername in the Name: field, for example \\\pr-hg-00-002.
  • Now you can select to make it the default printer.
  • Finally click Finish.

If you manage your PC or laptop yourself, the most simple solution is to create an account name and password identical to your FNWI account. Then Windows will automatically use the correct account name and password. An other solution would be to connect to the printer using Connect using a different user name.

Install a printer (\\\toorop as an example):

  • Click: Start -> Settings -> Printers
  • Doubleclick: Add Printer
  • Select: Network printer (but for Windows NT select local printer).
  • Network path: \\\toorop

Now click several times on 'Next', select Default Printer as needed and deselect Would you like to print a test page. You can change the settings of the printer in de tabs you get when selecting Properties.

For departmental printers it is usually necessary to select the brand en model of the printer.

Printing on a Managed Linux PC

With system-config-printer you can choose your default printer ("Set as Default").

To print to a budgetted printer, you need a Kerberos ticket. If your home directory comes from a server which demands NFS4 with Kerberos (e.g. pile and bundle), you should already have a valid Kerberos ticket. The command klist shows your Kerberos tickets, with kinit you can get or renew a Kerberos ticket and finally Kdestroy allows you to start all over again.

To show the printer queue, use lpq -P<printername>. All other ways, like the graphical application, always show an empty queue.

Printing on other Linux machines

In Linux you can choose to print in the same way Windows-machines do, through SMB to a Samba-server.

Choose as device URI smb://printsmb/<printername>.

We would like to offer budgetted printing using the printserver That is why we would like to use as a device URI for Linux or Mac smb://<printernaam>.
But we are bitten by a bug [2] [3] and a configuration issue. A work around is using an alternative device URI smb://printsmb/<printernaam>, ie change to to smb in the machine name and leave out the domain part.

  • As device URI, type smb://printsmb/<printername> or smb://username:password@printsmb/<printername>, where you have to fill in your own username and password and must use the correct name of the printer in printername. You might be unable to put your password directly in the URI if your password contains special signs. To overcome this problem you can replace the special sign by a '%' (percent sign) followed by it's hexidecimal code. For example, if your password contains an '!' (exclamation mark) you can replace it with '%21'.
  • An alternative method to create a cups printer is the command lpadmin -p PrinterName -v smb://Username:Password@Server/Printer -P /path/to/yourprintermodel.ppd.
  • To print while connected to the wireless network eduroam, you need to add a line to the file /etc/hosts: printsmb.

Detailed instructions for OpenSuSE 11

  • Ask C&CZ to give your PC a permanent IP addres and name.
  • Ask the owner of the printbudget to add your "login" name to the list of users that is allowed to use the printer. This can be done by the printbudget owner using, choose "printing". However: only C&CZ can give permission to print from a computer that is not in the list of "C&CZ trusted" machines. For this purpose C&CZ has to give the command: "printbudget -g budgetname -m +user@host".
  • Start the SuSE setup tool YAST, give root password.
  • Choose: "Hardware", "Printer", "Print via network".
  • Click "connection wizard", "Line printer daemon (LPD) protocol".

Binding, cutting, stapling, ...

In the Faculty Library you can buy binders for your reports, etc. Also there is a cutting tool, a 23 hole punch and several staplers. All Konica Minolta printers can staple automatically.

Near HG03.089 one can also find a cutting tool, a 23 hole punch and a big stapler.

Using different paper types

If you want to print on something other than plain paper (60-81 g/m^2), then you need to specify the paper type. In kprinter you need to select Properties and choose the right paper type. For example if you use 82-105 g/m^2 paper on a Ricoh printer, choose Middle Thick; for 106-253 g/m^2 choose either Thick, Thick 2 or Thick 3 with increasing thickness.

If you don't do this, the printer ink might not stick to the paper well enough, which leads to ink stains on both your documents and the printer itself.

Note: These options are not available when you print using the command line.

A new accounting system is being developed by the ICT Service Center to provide uniform budgeted printing, copying and scanning on Radboud University campus. This system is called Peage.
