Eduroam CAT to setup Eduroam
The ISC made setting up the wireless network simpler and safer by switching to Eduroam CAT. Employees and students of Radboud University are offered an installer tailored to the RU campus network. Eduroam CAT currently supports various versions of Windows, MacOS, OS X, Linux, Chrome OS, Android and a generic EAP configuration. In order to use Eduroam CAT, Internet connectivity is necessary. On campus, this might be the network Eduroam-config, but then one must use the RU-specific instructions

More privacy in Mailman lists
In the context of the new privacy legislation the default properties of all mailman lists have been modified.
- the mailman lists are no longer publicly announced on the mailman server.
- the members of a list can only be viewed by the list administrators.
- subscription to a list is restricted to addresses in ru.nl, radboudumc.nl and mpi.nl.
The third property is probably too restrictive for some of the lists, list administrators can revert this change in the privacy options (Ban list).

For small screens of smartphones, the webmail of Roundcube is not very well suited. That is why there is an alternative now: Rainloop. You can set a "threaded view" in Rainloop, which is also handy for small screens. The Science addressbook is available in Rainloop. One can also use Rainloop for the RU Exchange mail. But Roundcube has many other advantages over Rainloop: manage folders shared with other users, shared labels and the administration of Sieve filters and out-of-office messages. Exchange account/mail-address Givenname.Surname at ru.nl for FNWI staff from August 1
Starting August 1, all FNWI employees who do not have an account yet in Exchange, the RU central mail and calendar, will get such an account and with that an extra mail address, of the form For anyone who already has an Exchange account, with a mail address ending in e.g. @ru.nl @donders.ru.nl @fnwi.ru.nl, nothing changes.
In Exchange one can share calendars with eachother, which makes making appointments easier. All new Exchange accounts will get a "redirect" to the current Science address. As a result, you will not miss an email: you only get an extra address, that redirects all new mail to the existing address.
Do you want to use Exchange? The "redirect" can be turned off by logging in to https://mail.ru.nl with your U-number preceded by "RU\" and your RU password. After that, you can remove the check box in "Options -> Create an Inbox Rule" at "redirect all incoming". Sending new Science mail to Exchange can be turned on by visiting the Do-It-Yourself Site and "forward" to the @ru.nl mail address.

Sustainability: automatically switching off computers
If a department wants to switch off the C&CZ managed computers that are not currently in use after working hours and/or lunch break, then C&CZ can automate that. Please contact Postmaster. Since years already, the pc's in the computer labs, study landscape and Library of Science are being switched off after working hours and a few times per day when not in use. This mechanism is also used to automatically install the Windows and Ubuntu Linux updates during the night.

C&CZ reachable via Whatsapp/Telegram/Signal
If you do not have cellphone coverage, but do have an Internet connection, then you can reach C&CZ also via Whatsapp/Telegram/Signal on +31 6 15 35 26 77. The direct reason for this is that not in all wings of the Huygens building all mobile carriers have good coverage. However, the wireless Eduroam network has good coverae everywhere, which allows all staff and students to call C&CZ, independent of their mobile provider. Gradually, more providers will support Wi-Fi calling, which eliminates the need for an app like Whatsapp/Telegram/Signal for this purpose. Currently only Vodafone supports Wi-Fi calling, KPN has plans to introduce this in 2017.

Departments can order card readers for Peage
The RU Facility Services (Facilitair Bedrijf) let us know that if a department wants to speed up the use of the Konica Minolta multifunctionals, a department can order a campus card reader for € 300,-. After that, a staff member only has to type the PIN (4 digits) and swipe the campus card to login, just like students do on the ground floor of the Huygens building. Because a new European tender is expected to be finished January 2018, this will only be of interest for very busy multifunctionals.

The ISC moved the wireless Eduroam network back within the RU firewall on the evening of May 22. In December 2015 it had been moved outside of the RU firewall because of firewall performance issues. The new firewall that is in place since December 2016 can handle much more traffic, therefore this move could be planned.

Poster printer service kamerbreed more reliable
The A0 photo printer kamerbreed, that C&CZ acquired free of charge in May 2013, printed many posters for staff and students. Lately there were several breakdowns, that took quite long to repair. That's why we decided to buy a new one, with warranty contract. In case of calamities we can switch to the old one. We expect that that makes the poster print service a guaranteed service for the next years, where we will not have to redirect customers to the RU copyshop.

Mentimeter for interactive presentations
Radboud University has a license for Mentimeter in the academic year 2016-2017. Possibly the license will be continued after that. Mentimeter is a tool to make a presentation interactive: listeners can vote anonymously with their phone, laptop or tablet on questions or statements. Feedback can be displayed immediately. Mentimeter resembles the older Shakespeak tool, but offers more functionality and is fully browser-oriented (does not work with a Powerpoint plugin like Shakespeak). Anyone with a mailadres within the RU domain can sign up.

Phasing out outdated password encryption
For security reasons C&CZ will phase out an outdated, now considered unsafe, encryption type of Science passwords. Accounts that haven't changed their passwords since September 1, 2014, will be affected. The change will be carried out mid February 2017.
If you haven't changed the password of your Science account for several years, it is very likely that some services still use the old encryption type. Examples of these services are passwords used to login to Linux machines, Eduroam access by using your Science account or the Science VPN server. To continue using these services, the old encryption has to be replaced. This can be done by resetting your Science password at the Do It Yourself site. The menu item 'password' allows you to set your password. This page also shows a remark about when your password was last changed.

Donation to free and open source software
For the majority of the services C&CZ uses free software and open source software. Therefore, some time ago the idea emerged that the C&CZ employees would vote on which projects would receive a donation of C&CZ. This year the Free Software Foundation (FSF) and Limesurvey were chosen. The FSF supports GNU/Linux, which is used on almost all servers maintained by C&CZ and on many hundreds of workstations, including the computer labs. LimeSurvey is used for conducting surveys since 2008. Since the end of 2011, it is used for all ca. 500 course evaluations of the Faculty of Science per year. In addition, it is also used by departments (as PUC, ISIS and the Education Center) and individual employees and students of the Faculty of Science. For more info, see our LimeSurvey page.

Password hygiene: personal and not too old, just like a toothbrush
The RU has recently held a Treat your password like your toothbrush campaign. C&CZ too will act on old passwords: IT contacts will get a list of their users that have not changed their Science password in years. Old Science passwords do not have the most recent encryptions, therefore we would like to see them changed to remedy this. Even choosing a new Science password that is the same as the old one, helps to get rid of old password encryptions but please do choose a new password. Science passwords can be changed at the Do-It-Yourself website. The configuration and installation information of the new VPN (the IPsec based vpnsec.science.ru.nl) has been improved, in particular for OS X. The Vpnsec-macosx.mobileconfig has been signed with a certificate that can be verified. The new VPN can now be used with all devices that we tested. All users should move to the new VPN before May 1, 2016. After that, we will terminate the old VPN, that is based on PPTP.

IPv6 pilot project
C&CZ and ISC Networks jointly started a pilot project with IPv6 networks early 2016. The aim of the project is to gain knowledge on and experience with IPv6 in order to implement it successfully on all campus networks. Currently there are two dual-stack Vlans, 1 for clients and 1 for servers. Since this is a pilot, no guarantees are given and IPv6 connectivity can be shut down for changes and maintenance. One expected change is the moving of the SURFnet IPv6 connection from the Huygens building to the Forum (ISC building). Until then, only outlets in the FNWI buildings can be connected to this network. Joining the pilot is thus only possible at the moment through C&CZ Networks, , for outlets in FNWI buildings.

Move to RU print system Peage
C&CZ and the ISC are preparing the replacement of the C&CZ printing system by the RU-wide Peage printing system, that can be used by students some years now. Once staff and guests can also use Peage, the C&CZ printing system can be phased out. The move is expected to take place from April. Peage benefits include: follow-me-printing and Scan-to-Me scanning. A disadvantage is that one can not have different budget groups. Charging employees for the costs will be done through the account (kostenplaats) of the chief appointment. The Konica Minolta printer in the restaurant of the Huygens building is a Peage printer already. If Peage is further implemented, we will start with the Konica Minolta printers on the ground floor of the Huygens building. After the ground floor, we will continue with the other floors and finally with the buildings around Huygens.

Science SLURM compute cluster: using idle nodes
The SLURM configuration of the cn-cluster has been changed. This gives jobs of owners high priority in their own partition (on their own nodes) and it makes it possible for all users to use all nodes with low priority. Next to that, all users can submit jobs to run on the C&CZ purchased node, with shorter running jobs getting higher priority.

Compute clusternode for general FNWI use
In order to facilitate FNWI departments that don't have their own clusternodes, but that incidentally have computing needs, C&CZ has purchased a cn-clusternode. The original reason for C&CZ to buy this computer server actually was to help departments phase out old clusternodes that are much less energy efficient (performance per Watt). The C&CZ clusternode is a Dell PowerEdge R730 with 2 processors (10-core Xeon E5-2660V3 at 2.6 GHz) and 256 GB memory.

Don't become the source of a data breach yourself!
In order not to become the source of a data breach yourself, it is wise to consider what personal information you have of others (colleagues, students, ...). If you do not really need this information, deleting it is the safest option. Encrypting personal data, e.g. by using the free software 7zip (open source) or VeraCrypt, both available for Windows/Linux/MacOSX, is a good choice too, especially if you have the data on a mobile data carrier, such as a laptop or a USB stick. The filesystem of smartphones/tablets/laptops can often be encrypted too (Windows, Android, iPad/iPhone). Furthermore in case of theft or loss, these can often be remotely wiped (Android, iPad/iPhone). Reports of a data breach can be done at C&CZ, but also 24/7 at the ISC IT Helpdesk, tel: (024-36)22222 / e-mail: .

Data breaches must be reported and will be fined
As of January 1, 2016, organizations are obliged by law to report data leaks. If you notice that you have access to personal data that you shouldn't have, you have to report that, e.g. to C&CZ and/or CERT-RU. If you yourself are working with personal data, you need to do that securely. Unsecure handling of personal data could lead to a huge fine. In the near future, extra attention will be given to informing and involving the RU community w.r.t. this issue.

Watch out! Scammers send mail resembling a picture sent from a smartphone
Early this week, many employees received an email with the subject "img", as entire content "Sent from my Lenovo" and as attachment malware with a name like "IMG_0112201135_2015 JPEG.cab". A ".cab" file is a compressed archive, similar to a zip file. Because people on Windows PCs usually do not see file extensions, this seems to be a picture (JPEG) to them, but it is a "....JPEG.exe". Double clicking on the fake picture infects the computer by executing the ".exe". Therefore C&CZ changed the MIMEDefang filter on the Science mailserver to remove ".cab" attachments from mails, as has been done for years with other dangerous extensions like ".exe". When a user fell for this malware all kinds of files were encrypted by the malware and the user was notified about a ransom that had to be paid to decrypt the files. This could be fixed by reinstalling the PC and restoring a backup of before the encryption. As of today, this malware is also detected by F-Secure. Idea: change your Windows settings not to hide file extensions.

Wireless network FNWI much improved in coverage and capacity
In the past months, the number of wireless access points in the Huygens building, Mercator 1 and HFML has been much increased, from 97 to 219. Almost all of these access points also support the new 802.11ac standard. This has much improved both coverage and capacity of the wireless network 'eduroam' in these buildings. To make sure that both coverage and capacity is optimal in important locations, the ISC will take measurements in the next weeks. We also ask users within FNWI that still have problems with the wireless network, to report this to the C&CZ helpdesk (). Where necessary, adjustments will then be made. More information about the wireless network can be found at the ISC website. The other FNWI buildings will get an upgrade in 2016, if budget is available.

The ISC has announced that SURFdrive is available for RU employees. This gives a maximum of 100 GB of Dropbox-like storage for work-related files, that should not have the security classification critical or sensitive. Data is stored within Dutch borders, the users remain the owners of their own data, and SURF itself provides no information to third parties, which makes SURFdrive more secure than Dropbox. Earlier SURF made SURFfilesender available, with which you can send larger files more secure than with alternatives like WeTransfer.

Total Vodafone coverage in Huygens with first Ericsson Radio Dot in the world
Coverage for mobile phones on the Vodafone network, as used for Vodafone Wireless Office has been extended to the basements and transport corridors of the Huygens building. This became possible, because Ericsson and Vodafone were interested in doing a pilot in the Huygens building with the first live enterprise deployment of the Radio Dot system worldwide. This is in addition to the distributed antenna system built in 2011, which was necessary because of the similarity of the Huygens building with a Faraday cage. This reminds some veterans of June 1987, when a pilot was carried out at the Faculty of Science by PTT (now KPN), Philips, SURF and the university with the first PABX with a large amount of data traffic in The Netherlands. This PABX is still in use for speech phone calls in the periphery of the Huygens building.

Student.ru.nl and fnwi.ru.nl mail also accessible through Roundcube
During the weekend of November 12, 13 and 14, the ISC will move the mail of @student.ru.nl from the old RU Share service to the new RU Exchange service. This can be accessed with a browser via RU Exchange webmail, but also via C&CZ Roundcube webmail, by choosing mail.ru.nl in the drop-down menu. Advantages of Roundcube are that you can set multiple sender addresses (via Settings->Identities) and that the Science LDAP addressbook is available, which contains all Science staff and students. The RU Exchange AD address book has very little FNWI scientific staff. Furthermore Roundcube has a more powerful and modern interface independent of the browser used. You can also leave out the extra RU\ before the U- or S-number when logging in. A disadvantage w.r.t. the standard Outlook Web Access might be that Roundcube does not have calendar support, it is only an IMAP mailclient.

Notice of change in Microsoft licenses as of 2015
The ISC let us know that by January 1, 2015 there will be a new licensing agreement with Microsoft through Surfmarket. The main difference appears to be that the license for Microsoft Office on Windows PCs owned by the University, will be followed by a license for Office 365 Plan E3 (formerly A3) for all RU staff. This will most likely mean that installing Office on Windows PCs and iPads/iPhones that are private property of RU staff will be possible under the license as of January 1, 2015. More information will follow in the first quarter of 2015.

In the past few days, a dozen students and staff of the Faculty of Science fell for a phishing email again. In broken Dutch the email stated that the mailbox was almost full. The subject often was "WAARSCHUWING" and the sender called himself "Admin". The mail contained a link to a counterfeit Science webmail page hosted by http://www.heliohost.org/ , a provider of free websites. On this website everybody could read the login names and passwords of everybody who reacted to the phishing email. Because of vulnerabilities in the SSLv3 security protocol, C&CZ has switched off support for this protocol on all C&CZ managed web servers. Terminal server ts2 and print server drukker from NWI to B-FAC
Due to decommissioning of the NWI.RU.NL Active Directory domain, on November 16 the terminal server ts2 and the printer server for departmental printers drukker will be moved from NWI.RU.NL to B-FAC.RU.NL. This change is of consequence for logging on to the terminal server ts2 and for connecting to printers from the print server drukker.
If you are logging on to the terminal server ts2 using NWI\loginname, you will have to change this to B-FAC\loginname. In the case of the print server drukker, if connecting to printers using \\drukker.nwi.ru.nl\printername, you have to change this to \drukker.b-fac.ru.nl\\printername. The easiest way to do this is to remove and reconnect the printer from the server.

Secure network for vulnerable pcs attached to equipment
Often PCs attached to expensive measuring equipment do not get software updates, because the risk is too high that afterwards there is a problem with the equipment. In those cases C&CZ network administration can help by isolating the PCs on a separate shielded network, with specific rules for the network traffic allowed to and from that network segment. It is possible to write data to a network drive, that can be read (but not written) from other locations. Also traffic to the C&CZ printer server can be allowed, so no local printer is necessary. Departments such as Microbiology, HFML and FELIX have been using this shield for years. A recent vulnerability that is a huge risk for for Linux systems without software updates, is Shellshock. Windows systems will be very vulnerable unless they have the Microsoft patches that are published on Patch Tuesday.

Change passwords after Heartbleed OpenSSL bug
If you don't want to read the details below: it is advised to change the Science password on the DIY website. The same holds for the RU password and other passwords for Internet services.
April 7, 2014, a two-year-old vulnerability was announced in several versions of OpenSSL. OpenSSL is used for encrypting network traffic. Because of this vulnerability, an attacker could have retrieved the secret key of a service, with which traffic could be decrypted. In addition to this, due to this vulnerability an attacker could read the memory of the service, thereby retrieving sensitive information like passwords.
After the announcement of this Heart Bleed OpenSSL leak all vulnerable C&CZ services were automatically repaired. On Thursday, April 10th, we have deployed new certificates for these services. The old certificates will be revoked. If one has used one of these C&CZ services, it is wise to change the Science password on the DIY website. The old password could have become known to an attacker. For the full list of C&CZ services that were vulnerable and references to vulnerable external services, see the C&CZ certificate page. The most used ones are:
- Mail users:
- squirrel.science.ru.nl: The old Science webmail service was vulnerable since January 29, 2014.
- roundcube.science.ru.nl: The new Science webmail service.
- autoconfig.science.ru.nl: The website for automatic configuration of mail clients like Thunderbird and Outlook.
- Lecturers: dossiers.science.ru.nl and eduview.science.ru.nl

There is a tele lecture room at the Faculty of Science: HG00.108. This facility makes it possible for students who are elsewhere in the world, to participate virtually and interactively in a lecture given in this room. The other way around is also possible. Moreover in the large conference room HG01.060 a video conferencing facility has been created. This setup also serves as backup for the tele lecture facility. For help and advice please contact the Audiovisual Department of our faculty.

RU uniform print costs
As of February 1, C&CZ will change the [http://wiki.science.ru.nl/cncz/Printers_en_printen?setlang=en#.5BKosten.5D.5BCosts.5D print costs], in agreement with the RU Executive Board decision to make print costs uniform within Radboud University. The price for black&white A4 will increase 5.7%. Costs for A4 color, A3 black&white and A3 color will be lowered by 18%, 54% and 31% respectively. Because we hope that the C&CZ print system will be replaced by the RU wide Peage system in the near future, we will not immediately prioritize to adapt the C&CZ print system to make single-sided more expensive than double-sided, as is now the case elsewhere on campus.

New network disks bigger and less expensive
Because C&CZ has a new file server, we can lower the pricing of network disks by 50%. Due to the recently announced new backup service larger disks (400GB) are also possible. A new option is an un-backupped disk, which is four times less expensive. Such a disk could be used for copies of a local disk. Contracts for hiring a network disk are still entered into for a period of three years. Existing contracts are not changed.

MobaXterm: powerful X11/SSH/etc. client for Windows
MobaXterm is now available on the S-disk. It is a powerful and easily usable alternative for X11/SSH software like Xming, Xwin32, WinSCP and Putty. From the MobaXterm website: "MobaXterm is an enhanced terminal for Windows with an X11 server, a tabbed SSH client and several other network tools for remote computing (VNC, RDP, telnet, rlogin). MobaXterm brings all the essential Unix commands to Windows desktop, in a single portable exe file which works out of the box." The support of OpenGL could also be a reason to start using MobaXterm. If you use it professionally, you should consider subscribing to MobaXterm Professional Edition. We already reported that the support of X-win32 ends January 31, 2014. If you still need to switch, MobaXterm is a good choice.

Automatic configuration of mail clients
When installing a mail client it is now possible to configure all settings (login name, IMAP and SMTP server and parameters) automatically for most of the C&CZ mail domains. In general you just need to fill in your main mail address. For details, see the mail service page. Using a webmail service like Roundcube is even simpler, there are no settings to fill in.

Laptops without wifi to use for examinations without Internet access
It is now possible to borrow laptops from the Science laptop pool with wireless network switched off. These laptops can be used for examinations to allow students to use a computer without giving easy access to the internet. Wifi has been switched off by default on two laptops in the pool by request of the Education Center in order to assist disabled students with examinations. For larger examinations, please reserve the laptops in time, specifying the need for wireless networking switched off if necessary.

Begin : 20131223 07:30 End : 20131223 09:00 (expected) Affected : Users with homedirectory server "bundle" (as can be seen on http://DIY.science.ru.nl)
The replacement of the old home server "bundle" has been postponed and will now guaranteed take place on Monday morning December 23. Because the data have been synchronized with the new server, there will not be much downtime. The new server should be very dependable: hardware RAID-6, double processors and power supplies and a 5-year support contract from the supplier. The performance has improved, e.g. by using hardware RAID with a 1 GB write cache with battery backup.

Upgrade F-Secure security software
The most recent version of F-Secure can be bought by RU employees now for ca. € 5,25 at Surfspot, search for "secure". It is F-Secure Internet Security 2014 for 1 year, for 1 user. This version also supports Windows 8. F-Secure for Android and Mac are available with the same license. The support for version 9, that could be used freely at home, ends on February 6, 2014. The business suite version that is used on campus, that can be found on the Install network share, can't be used at home, since it needs to communicate with a policy manager. N.B.: The private license doesn't cover use by family members or roommates. See Radboudnet news for more info and updates.

In all buildings of Radboud University the Eduroam wireless network is now available. The wireless network ru-wlan will be discontinued on January 15, 2014. Please switch to Eduroam as soon as possible. One can login with U- or Sfirstname.lastname@example.org and RU-password or with email@example.com and Science password. Note: Laptops with Windows 8 sometimes do not connect automatically to Eduroam. If this is the case, choose "Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)" at the prompt "Choose network authentication" during configuration. The iPhone, iPad and iPod cannot cope with multiple corporate networks, so one has to 'Forget' ru-wlan before configuring Eduroam. Wireless network configuration manuals for various devices and operating systems are available on the IT Servicecenter website.

Electronic cost declaration through i-Expense, also from home/Internet
Since the introduction of i-Expense, the electronic cost declaration module in BASS-Finlog - the financial computer system of our university, the number of BASS users has increased enormously. New users need to be aware whether they can access BASS directly or only through the so called Port Forwarder. Recently, access from home/Internet has been made possible if one uses VPN. More information on this can be found on the BASS page and in a previous [news article] about using BASS in combination with the RU firewall.
Logging on to BASS may be cumbersome or impossible from certain workstations because the BASS infrastructure does not support all kinds of PC-systems seamlessly. Cost declarations on paper are allowed if logging on to BASS fails for some reason, until the logon difficulties are solved. The central organisation and C&CZ work together to this end.

Because of Peter's retirement this role was taken over by C&CZ. This means that all support questions regarding the websites of the Faculty of Science, regardless of the underlying technique, can be directed to C&CZ. In practice the support task for the CMS is in the hands of Wim G.H.M. Janssen, IT specialist at the IMAPP institute. C&CZ (especially Fred Melssen) will function as Wim's backup.

Replacement of Ricoh multifunctionals by Konica Minolta
The European tender for multifunctionals (printer/copier/scanner) for the university was won by Konica Minolta. This means that the current Ricoh machines will be replaced. There is a project to make the print/copy/scan system Péage suitable for employees. The printing and copying costs for employees will be charged to their "aanstellingskostenplaats", i.e. the current budget groups will disappear. Until this project is completed successfully, the C&CZ printbudget system will be used.
- Since the new Peage system will not support Xafax copycards, it is advised to minimize your local stock of Xafax copycards.
- The first Konica Minolta MFP's will be placed for the expansion to Huygens 2.0 (Mercator 1).
- The first replacement of Ricoh-machines in FNWI will be in April: the Peage printer Watt near the restaurant.

More IP-numbers for ru-wlan and Science (wireless)
Monday, March 4th 2013 at 18:00 hours, the number of IP numbers that is available in the FNWI buildings for ru-wlan and Science was doubled, as was announced shortly before. Because ru-wlan moved to a new range, users of ru-wlan lost connectivity for at most 15 minutes. There was already a plan to replace ru-wlan and Science within the FNWI buildings by the RU-wide Eduroam and ru-wlan, but the wireless network usage had grown so fast that we could not wait for this plan to be realized. The week before, some wireless users at times could not even get an IP address, although the lease time had been brought down to 30 minutes. Therefore this temporary measure became necessary on such short notice. Because there are more IP numbers available now, more users can nowswitch from Science to ru-wlan wireless, in preparation for the realization of the plan mentioned above.

Phishing mail: "Belangrijke boodschap met betrekking tot uw Radboud Universiteit Webmail" en "Fwd: Your e-mail will expire soon"
Recently a number of employees of the Faculty of Science received a phishing email with the subject "Belangrijke boodschap met betrekking tot uw Radboud Universiteit Webmail" and content "Nieuw Belangrijk Veiligheid Bericht Alert! Inloggen om het probleem op te lossen." Others received mail with subject "Fwd: Your e-mail will expire soon". The link provided in the mail points to a copy of our Horde webmail service. Big differences are:
- the URL is not within science.ru.nl
- it is not a secure https connection, the lock is not present
- the account name and password that you type in, do not arrive at C&CZ servers, but at Internet criminals. They can then access all files and mail of that Science account. Usually the criminals try to use the user credentials to send spam via our mail servers. This is something we notice; in such a case C&CZ will disable the user account a.s.a.p. to prevent further abuse of the account and to prevent our mail servers from ending up on black lists.
It is not the first time we see a phishing attack specifically aimed at Science-users and it will most probably not be the last time either. Please stay alert! If you want to read more about phishing, please see this monthly security newsletter.

Miro printer: end of maintenance contract
Year after year some users preferred the Xerox Phaser color printer miro over the Ricoh Aficio laserprinters for its different (wax) color technique. It is not possible to have a maintenance contract in 2013 for miro. That doesn't mean that it's impossible to use miro, but it does mean that miro will be removed when a major hardware failure occurs in 2013. The plan is to have new multifunctionals all over the RU in the first half of 2013.

Mail problems after supplying password to phishers
Begin : 20121116 04:45 End : 20121117 ca 12:00 Affected : Users of horde webmail and users wanting to send mail to e.g. hotmail.com
Horde webmail again appeared to be misused for sending spam. This could happen because a naive user gave the Science password to phishers/spammers. After first stopping horde, early Friday morning we disabled the account of the naive user and restarted horde. Saturday morning it appeared that this short spam-outbreak had caused administrators of hotmail.com to add our mail server to their blacklist. Therefore we switched the IP-number of this mail server Saturday morning.

Phishing mail: Update Your Web Mailbox
Recently a number of employees of the Faculty of Science received a phishing email with the subject "Update Your Web Mailbox !!!" This email is supposedly sent by "Science.Ru.Nl Administrator" and tries to lure the recipients into giving away their login credentials. It is not the first time we see a phishing attack specifically aimed at Science-users and it will most probably not be the last time either. The mail contains a link to a shortened URL under http://goo.gl/ . If you fall for this and click on the link it leads you to a (now deleted) Google Docs site. If you are gullible enough to log in with your Science (or RU) credentials, then these become known to Internet criminals. This means that your account and all of your files and email are accessible by those criminals. This can go undetected for a long time until the user credentials are abused in such a way that the effects becomes visible. Usually the criminals try to use the user credentials to send spam via our mail servers, as recently happened. Recommendations after nu.nl hack
The popular Dutch news website NU.nl has been compromised and altered to serve a malicious worm to those who visited it on March 14, 2012 between 11:30 and 12:30. PC's with older versions of Adobe Reader and Java may have been infected with the Sinowal worm, that is designed to steal passwords, online banking information and other sensitive data. We heard reports that up-to-date installations of F-Secure Client Security blocked this malware. According to ComputerIdee only a few security software suites recognized this malware. The version of Hitmanpro mentioned there has been copied to the Install network share, for employees and students who want to scan their PC.
General recommendations to limit risks:
- Always update all software, especially browsers, mail clients and software used to show content from the Internet: Java, PDF-readers (Adobe, ...), Office suites, Flash, ...
- Never trust a compromised system again: Clean the Master Boot Record, e.g. with TDSSkiller by Kaspersky and do a fresh install of the OS, with all updates available.

Please use ru-wlan instead of Science wireless!
In the near future the wireless access points in the Huygens building and the buildings around it, will be replaced by new ones, based on a new technique. The Science wireless network will then no longer be available. Therefore please switch over to using the ru-wlan wireless network, that is available before and after. One can use ru-wlan with U-number and RU-password, but also with and Science-password. After the switch, faster (wireless-N) access points wille be used in busy areas. After the switch the eduroam wireless network will be available too, one can use that with and RU-password, but also with and Science-password. Before the switch, eduroam is only available near the Huygens building on the terrace behind the restaurant. In the future ru-wlan will be switched off, only eduroam will survive. Split-view DNS could influence Internet at home
Anyone using at home a science.ru.nl nameserver like ns1.science.ru.nl, should remove these DNS-servers from the list of DNS-servers, because we started using split-view DNS. The UCI introduced this a few months ago for e.g. the DNS zones ru.nl and heyendaal.net to increase IT security.

Never react to an e-mail that asks for your password!
A few days ago one of our users replied to an e-mail that apparently was sent by "support" and asked for username and password. This account was later misused to send hundred thousands spam-mails through our mail server. This resulted in the blacklisting of our outgoing mail server in e.g. the blacklists of Windows Live Hotmail. The fastest way to remedy this is to give our outgoing mail server a different IP-address, which we did this morning. Lesson: Never reply to an e-mail that asks for your username and password! The latest version of Matlab, R2011a, is available for departments that have bought licenses. The software and license codes can be acquired through a mail to postmaster for those entitled to it. The software can also be found on the install-disc. The C&CZ-managed 64- and 32-bit Linux machines have this version installed, an older version (/opt/matlab-R2010b/bin/matlab) is still available temporarily. The C&CZ-managed Windows machines will receive this version too.

Versioning of text and source code: Subversion hosting
Are you developing software? Do you write code? You've probably created some zip files of working versions to fall back to. Sounds familiar? You can now use the Subversion service of C&CZ. Subversion supports you with versioning of source code files. Using Subversion, progress becomes visible and there's always an 'undo button'. Ultimately, it's a nice way to manage any kind of collaborative work where multiple individuals are editing the same files. The Subversion service is available for people with a Science account. Repository access is also possible for people from outside the faculty.

Customer afternoon GDI, CIM and UCI
The IT User Service Group (GDI), the department Concern Information Management (CIM) and the University IT Centre (UCI) organize a common customer afternoon on Thursday October 20, 14.00-17.00 hours in the Mohrmanzaal (Aula, Comeniuslaan 2). Project leaders and other RU-experts will talk about recent developments w.r.t. digitization of documents on campus, the inclusion of personal particulars in concern systems, the e-mail- and calendar system Share and the facility management information system Planon. You can register for the event (before October 1) by sending an e-mail to the UCI secretariat or call them (17999).

Many years the UMCN has had a license for the use of Reference Manager within RU and UMCN. Some employees within the Faculty of Science used this, instead of the RU standard EndNote. At the end of 2011, the UMCN terminates the license for Reference Manager, it has switched to EndNote. More information about the switch to EndNote can be found on the University Library website.

Kun.nl mail-addresses removed
All users with a @*.kun.nl email address, which almost always is used only to forward the mail to a @*.ru.nl address, received almost two months ago an email that these addresses would be removed today. Today all @*.kun.nl have been removed, with a temporary exception for departments that have not been able to get externally registered addresses changed. This removal of @*.kun.nl email addresses has been coordinated between the administrators of email servers at Radboud University.

HP Battery Pack Safety Recall
Earlier this year HP has issued a Notebook PC Battery Pack Replacement Program notice regarding a number of notebook models which were shipped with battery packs which have the potential to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers. The list of affected models also includes a number of Compaq products. According to the HP notice the easiest way to validate your battery is to visit the HP Notebook PC Battery Replacement Program website. The Recall notice states that if your battery is affected, HP will provide a free replacement battery pack.

IT Security Campaign at the Faculty of Science
In April, May and June, C&CZ, GDI and UCI carry out an IT security campaign throughout Radboud University. During the campaign, extra attention will be paid to matters such as security software, keeping all software up-to-date, using Blackboard more secure, how to choose a safe password, how to use USB-sticks securely and 'phishing'. The campaign at the Faculty of Science started on Monday, May 23. On the RU IT security site you can find much more information about IT security. Everything under the motto: RU Secure!

USB-sticks causing infections
Many PC infections occur because the malware on a USB-stick is automatically started when you connect it to the PC, resulting in an infected PC. You can prevent this from happening by disabling the ‘autorun’-option on the PC.
Ben Polman 25 mei 2011 13:57 (UTC)
Sometimes even university staff and students are tricked into replying to a phishing email: you receive an email that looks like someone from support asks to reply with your password, to prevent your email account from being blocked. Never reply to these fake senders! Support personnel would never ask you for your password!

Lock screen when leaving the room!
Leaving your office for a few minutes? Then make sure to have your screen locked! If you leave your computer unattended (using no screensaver with password protection) and your room hasn't been locked, there is a chance that the data on your PC could be compromised, or that illegal actions could be carried out by someone. During the campaign, we will devote extra attention to unattended PC’s. You might be surprised to find a 'static' sticker on your monitor. You can turn on screen lock on a Windows computer by pressing the Windows and the L-button simultaneously.

Spamming PC's noticed faster
CERT-RU, that coordinates RU IT-security incidents, regularly receives reports about PC's that are distributing spam mail. Often these have been noticed by Senderbase, because the daily mail volume has been much larger than the monthly average. The routers at the Science Faculty log the initialization of an SMTP-connection outside Radboud University. Therefore spamming PC's often already have been cleaned when CERT-RU gets noticed by an outside party.

Changes in IT services
On September 1, 2009 GDI (Gebruikersdienst ICT) was formed by combining the former Computer Support Groups (COG's) of the various faculties and clusters of our university. Because of the special role of IT for FNWI, C&CZ continued to exist as the IT service group for FNWI.
Based on a formal decision of the Executive Board all standard Windows workstations and student PC's campus wide will be transferred to GDI. C&CZ will remain responsible for all other IT services in this faculty. At the moment GDI is preparing the transfer of the Windows workstations of the service departments as well as all course PC's. Users will be informed in time about the consequences of these changes. Until the takeover, which will take place in steps, C&CZ will remain responsible for all IT services for FNWI and will remain reachable through the well known channels.

Ubuntu login server
In the process of gradually replacing Fedora by Ubuntu, there have been several Ubuntu clients and servers installed. One of these is an experimental Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) login server lilo1.science.ru.nl for general use.
The choice for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) has been made because of the L(ong) T(ime) S(upport), 3 years for desktops and 5 years for servers. This in contrast to approximately 1 year updates and support for Fedora. Software, commonly used within the faculty, is available.
More likely than not, packages or programs will be missing or work in slightly different ways than on a Fedora system. It's also possible that settings for Fedora might cause problems on the Ubuntu systems. Please do not hesitate to report problems. Regrettably, we cannot garantee that all problems can or will be solved immediately.

New names for Linux login servers
Currently the login servers are named lilo.science.ru.nl (LInux LOgin server) and stitch.science.ru.nl. However, the actual machines have different names, porthos.science.ru.nl and lijfwacht.science.ru.nl respectively. This leads to confusion with some of our users. To address this issue we will phase out and rename some machines.
The oldest server lilo.science.ru.nl will be phased out no sooner than lilo1.science.ru.nl can take over. The current Fedora login server stitch.science.ru.nl will be renamed to lilo2.science.ru.nl.
The name lilo will eventually become an alias for the fastest login server and the name stitch will, for the time being, become an alias for lilo2. Whenever replacing login servers, new machine will receive a successive number, so lilo3, lilo4, etc.

Microsoft Office 2007
Currently the default office software on campus is Microsoft Office 2007. We tried to install this software on as many PC's as possible. If you still use an older version of Office then we would advise to install Microsoft Office 2007.
If your PC is owned by the university than you are allowed to use the campus license and you can borrow the software from our department or do the installation directly from the install disk (\\install-srv.science.ru.nl\install).
For privately owned PCs you can buy the software at a reduced price at Surfspot.

Windows print server
A new Windows 2008 printer server has been installed to support departemental printing. The server is named drukker.nwi.ru.nl -- edit 2014-11-18 renamed to drukker.b-fac.ru.nl. This server can support printing from Windows XP, Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit) and Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit). Printer drivers are automatically installed by connecting to the printer server and selecting the print queue.
- Currently very little problems occurred
- Only for standard, frequent installed, common available printers (HP LaserJet, Xerox, Ricoh)
- Little protection against abuse
- Cannot make use of the CnCZ print budget software, so no accounting or print budget facilities
This implies that only printers that are not publically available should be considered adding to this server. Please contact CnCZ to figure out if a printer is suitable for installation.
See Printers_en_printen for an explanation how to connect printers.

If you want to save your user settings when logging in on the PC's in study landscape, computer labs, etc., you have to login to the Do-It-Yourself website and check in Profile: "Roaming profile for B-FAC domain". When asked for password through mail: do not react!
Every so often our users receive phishing-mail, in which a prompt response with username and password is requested. C&CZ likes to stress *again* that it is not very wise to believe something just because is written in a letter or e-mail and that *no official institution* will ever ask you for your password, just like a bank never will ask you for your pincode for your bank account. If a naive user falls for this scheme, his account is normally soon thereafter misused to send spam, with the effect that our mailservers are included in blacklists, causing problems for all users.

Reduce mail from *-studenten-* mailing lists
Student representatives reported to C&CZ that some students would like to reduce the amount of mails they receive from the Mailman mailing lists. The mailing lists for students are the umbrella list fnwi-studenten, and the lists per discipline and year that make up the umbrella list. Therefore C&CZ changed the configuration of the -studenten- mailing lists, so digests (summaries) for the -students- mailing lists are only mailed once a week. Of course this only has an effect for students who have selected to prefer to be mailed a digest instead of receiving every mail separately. For all other Mailman mailinglists a digest is mailed once a day. The digest option can be selected per user per mailing list, e.g. on the -studenten-discipline/year mailing list website, through "change your subscription options".

Roaming user profiles for Windows can be enabled and disabled
On the Do-It-Yourself-website it is possible to enable and disable roaming user profiles for the domains NWI and B-FAC. The default is to use roaming profiles for the NWI domain and not for the B-FAC domain. In general logging on and off will be a little bit faster without using a roaming user profile, but a disadvantage is that user settings will not be saved. Examples of user settings that wil not be saved are the Desktop backgound image, documents stored on the Desktop, Email settings, 'Favorites', 'Recent Documents', etc. Without a roaming profile documents that are placed on the desktop will not be saved!

Linux cups server and printing using Kerberos tickets
To print from Linux to a budgetted printer you had to type your account password for every print job. Sometimes this was problematic if the application was not started from a terminal window. Now there is a CUPS-server drukwerk.science.ru.nl which demands a valid Kerberos ticket, so you do not need to type your password for every print job. Managed Linux PCs running Fedora 8 and above already use this CUPS-server. A Kerberos ticket granting ticket can be obtained by typing kinit.
We will try to extend this CUPS-server in such a way it can be used for Windows IPP-printing.

New pc's in pc rooms dual-boot Windows/Linux
All new pc's in the pc rooms and study landscape are dual-boot: an individual student or employee can choose to start Windows-XP or Linux Fedora 11. The rooms can now also be used for courses that require Linux. Only the older pc's in TK075 (HG00.075) are still single-boot Windows-XP. In the course of 2010 the migration to Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 Linux will start.

Old pc's for sale to Science employees and students
In January, all 5 year old pc's in pc rooms and study landscape have been replaced by new ones. Departments of the Science Faculty have already had the opportunity to express their interest in these old pc's. C&CZ still has a few dozen left, which are now offered to individual employees and students of the Science Faculty, almost without any guarantee. When interested, contact C&CZ (Helpdesk, Theo Neuij/Mathieu Bouwens, 20000). Specifications: Dell Optiplex SX280; Pentium 4 dual core processor 2.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB hard disc, including (attached) 17" TFT-flatscreen, keyboard and mouse.

Web application for employee attendance
Within various service departments of the Faculty of Science, a web application for employee attendance (time registration) is used. This application is based on the open source system TimeTrex. Other departments that are interested in using the system for one or more employees, should contact C&CZ. Registration is done with passes or on the web. It can be helpful for the administration of variable working hours. It is a somewhat flexible system, that e.g. can also be switched to automatically register attendance, which makes it into a (sick) leave registration system. There is no interface (yet) with the RU BASS-HRM registration of (sick) leave, which has to be updated at least quarterly.

Saving time when making appointments (manage calendars)
If you spend a lot of time planning appointments, especially with stable and/or big lists of employees, please read on.
The last few weeks, the Faculty Office succesfully tested the Mozilla SunBird calendar software. At this moment, with this software one can view the free/busy information of a few dozen employees that are using Outlook, Google Calendar or a Science Faculty E-Groupware calendar.
If you are interested in using this calendar software, we would like to hear from you, with a list of persons with whom you most often make (group) appointments. These persons can change their calender settings themselves.
Radboud University intends to migrate in 2010 to a modern mail/agenda system for all employees and students. This system can be used with a nice webclient, but also with Outlook, Thunderbird etc. This should make planning appointments with RU employees really simple and efficient. If you can wait for this new system, you do not have to react of course.

BASS on Mac and Linux
The use of the BASS (Oracle) concern applications for HRM and financial transactions is supported only on some Windows platforms. However because BASS is essentially a Java application running from a browser it should function just as well from other platforms such as Macs and Linux systems. Indeed we were able to place an order through BASS from a Linux (Fedora 11) system and we've heard that for some people BASS also works from a Mac. For those who are not afraid to experiment a little we have collected a few hints on our BASS page which may help you to get things going.

PCs in the Library of Science accessible by all RU students
As of December 23, 2009 all students of Radboud University can logon to the PCs in the Library of Science in the Huygens building with their RU account (s-number). Make sure to choose the RU logon domain at the logon screen.
- Personal configuration settings are not preserved between sessions on these PCs.
- Only the black-and-white printers in the vicinity of the library are automatically available. Other printers need to be configured manually for each session. For instructions please come to the library front desk.
FNWI students and staff can also logon with their science account (domain B-fac), yet without their personal profile. However, the U-network drive with their personal data is available. On PC's in the terminal rooms the personal profiles are still available.
In January the PCs in the Studielandschap will be replaced by brand new hardware. The new PCs will be accessible by all RU students.

New Comodo certificates with Windows Mobile 6.1 problem
The new Comodo certificates, that were announced in May, are gradually being used by RU-servers. The expectation that these certificates would be "popup free", has not been completely fulfilled: users with a Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone are advised to check the presence of the Comodo SSL root certificate. Without this root certificate, usage of the secure wireless network or secure RU-websites will become impossible.

Backup tape robots upgraded
C&CZ has upgraded its two 5 year old LTO2 (200 Gb/tape uncompressed) 8-Tape Library units to two LTO4 (800 Gb/tape uncompressed) 24-Tape Library units. We named them R2D2 and C3PO. This upgrade not only increases the backup capacity by a factor of 12, which is necessary because more and more data needs to be backupped. It also speeds up the backup and restore times because the drives are faster and the manual operational overhead is reduced.
In the near future we will be looking for a new destination for our old but still trustworthy LTO2 units. If you are interested please mail to postmaster at science.ru.nl.

On 7 december, during the regular update of the spamfilter, a new filter set turned out to tag too many valid messages as spam. Therefore some valid mail ended up in people's Spam folders, so-called false positives. Please search your Spam folder (a subfolder of Inbox) for false positives. It is advisable to do so once a week even under normal circumstances if you do not want to miss any mail, but for December 7 and 8 there is a direct reason to do so.

Linux print problem and change
The FSR reported a security problem with printing on Fedora Linux, that made it possible to print using the budget of a different user. As a temporary emergency solution, one has to supply a password when printing login server, like lilo and stitch, to a budgeted printer. See the print information to print from within an application that doesn't ask for a password. A final solution, the deployment of a central CUPS-server, couldn't be realized in a very short timeframe. Thanks to the FSR for reporting this problem.

Linux login servers: upgrade and addition
The operating system of the general purpose Linux login server lilo (formally porthos.science.ru.nl) has been upgraded to Fedora 11. Also a second Linux login server named stitch (formally lijfwacht.science.ru.nl) is now available. Lilo and stitch are identical as far as the software is concerned but stitch has newer, more powerful hardware (8 cores, 2.5 GHz each, 8GB internal memory). In case of a problem with one of these servers the other one serves as backup. These changes were initiated because of a security issue on lilo before the upgrade and agree with our goal to eliminate the old Solaris login servers solo and solost eventually. 1234567890 seconds since The Epoch
Next Saturday February 14 at 00:31:30 local time the time counter that is commonly used in the Unix world, i.e. the number of seconds since January 1, 1970 UTC ('The Epoch'), reaches the pleasing value of 1234567890. Perhaps even more exciting is the fact that in the early morning of January 19, 2038 the counter reaches the maximum value that can be stored in a 32 bit signed integer. Luckily there still is enough time to find a solution for this daunting challenge compared to which the Y2K problem was just a stroll in the park.

Again power failure server room HG04.070
Saturday Jan 31 around 03:00h the power supply fire protection unit in the server room HG04.070 was activated again, which caused the immediate and complete power down of all servers in that room. This time as well no sensor had detected a temperature high enough to activate the protection unit.
There was no extra information available to determine a more definitive cause for the immediate 'Emergency Stop' of the UPS unit.
To prevent a new faulty fire alarm event, only one (1) temporary, mechanical temperature switch, can activate the UPS 'Emergency Stop'.
The complete fire alarm power switching unit with 4 temperature senors has been disconnected from the UPS 'Emergency Stop'. This system is still working and is still connected to and monitored by the building alarm system.
It has been discovered that every door entrance has a fire-key-switch, directly connected to the UPS 'Emergency Stop'. These switches were not connected to the building alarm system. The switches are now disconnected from the UPS 'Emergency Stop' and are now connected to and monitored by the building alarm system.
This setup ensures that:
- there still is a working fire power protection unit, be it with a only one slow sensor at one place (near the hot spot).
- a failure in the old circuit of the door switches will be detected, but cannot cause a UPS 'Emergency Stop'.
- it will be clear when an UPS internal problem is the cause of an UPS 'Emergency Stop'.
Depending on future alarms, new information will come available to explain power failures and their causes.
It is agreed that the current situation will remain in place for at least two months unless an alarm occurs.

Then the fixing hardware and software problems resulting from the immediate shutdown could be started. This took several hours for some systems. Work on the student file server lasted until the morning of January 21.

Causing trouble for colleagues by reacting to phishing mail (mail asking for password)
A week ago a too naive colleague reacted to a phishing mail by sending his loginname and password. That made it impossible for that server to send mail to some organisations. Critical security flaw in Adobe Acrobat t/m versie 8.1.2
Adobe Acrobat has a critical security flaw, all users of version 8 are recommended to update to version "8.1.2 Security Update 1". Since the site-license for Adobe software has finally come through, this update can probably best be combined with the update to the Professional version.

New version of the Windows Managed PC
There is a new installation method for the Windows-XP Managed PCs, that has been developed and is being maintained by several IT-support groups in the RU tohether, in the SITO (Samenwerkende IT-Ondersteuning) project. The main difference is that more software is installed, and that it is less dependent on network drives. Many PCs in the Study Landscape and several departmental PCs have been installed with the new method.

Matlab: TIMEOUTALL introduced, installation procedure changed
After an idea from FC Donders, C&CZ changed the options for the Matlab license server to include a 'TIMEOUTALL 3600'. This has the advantage that an inactive user can hold a license for Matlab or a toolbox for 1 hour at maximum, but could cause problems sometimes for the many tens of users within Radboud Unicversity and Hospital, because it can happen that a long-running Matlab job stops because there is currently no license available.
With Matlab version R2008a the Matlab installation procedure has been changed.

Adobe Flash Player Security Vulnerability
Last week word was spread about abuse by installing keyloggers through a security vulnerability in the Adobe Flash plugin of browsers like Internet Explorer and Firefox. C&CZ managed computers have been updated to the latest version. C&CZ advises everybody to upgrade to version 18.104.22.168 if not already done. Testing can be done through the Adobe testpage and holding the mouse above "About". For even more browser security one can quite easily install the Firefox extension NoScript.

Removing old mail addresses helps prevent spam
At this time (May 2008) we often see that suddenly a lot of spam is sent from different places on the Internet, with a (fake) sender address of the old "@sci.kun.nl" form. For the owner of such an address this gives some trouble, since the spam that cannot be delivered wiil come "back" to the sender address that was used. To help prevent this, it is a good idea to look in the DIY website which old "kun.nl" addresses can be removed and mail that to postmaster.

Standard RU-laptop chosen
Recently the RU hardware specification team has added to the standard PC from the "core hardware" from the default supplier also a standard RU-laptop: the HP6710b. There are 2 versions, the more expensive one has at least a faster processor, a bigger hard disk a screen with higher resolution and standard more memory. C&CZ currently works on making it possible to use these laptops as "Windows managed laptop", comparable to the [[Windows_beheerde_werkplek|Windows managed PC].

Network upgrade successful
Sunday morning April 20 between 09:30 and 11:30 hours the router/switch that couples the networks on the Toernooiveld with each other and with the rest of the RU campus network (and by that with Surfnet/Internet), was replaced by a new, more powerful machine. The work was planned by C&CZ en UCI to cause minimal trouble for employees and students.
The next few weeks other changes to the network will be made, but the trouble this will cause will be much less.
Some aspects of this upgrade: 1 router/switch that is spread over 2 locations, with 10Gb uplinks to the UCI. The router/switch can provide better protection since it has more room for "access control lists"and by using "reverse path forwarding". By using FlexLinks desktop switches can easily be connected redundantly. Cascades of desktop switches can be split, since more interfaces are available. Also antique connections to remote locations can be upgraded.
About the new network (NiNe) the UCI reported in the Enter magazine

Power problem April 10/11
Thursday evening April 10 at 21:30 a power glitch for wings 1 and 2 of the Huygens building caused power switches to triple. Thanks to a UPS in wing 1 the router and network switches kept on running until 22:30. The UVB fixed the power to the router and swityches in wing 1. Power to the switches in wing 2 was not fixes until 10:00, which made the problem last the longest in wing 2 and the eastside of the central street between wings 2 and 4 (no network). C&CZ will contact the UVB to try to give more priority to restoring power for network equipment.

The standard disk quota for students have been enlarged to 400 MB. Students can thus save more files on their homedirectory (H: disk) which, hopefully, lets them store less files on their Desktop (or anywhere else in their profile). A large profile makes log-in and -out slow.

RU now victim of phishing scam too (mail asking for password)
Now also a lot of RU employees received emails, that at first sight looked as if they were sent by a RU Helpdesk, in which was asked for a reply with loginname and password. The reply of a naive user again went to a "@hotmail.co.uk" mail-address. C&CZ likes to stress again that *no official institution* will ever ask you for your password, just like a bank never will ask you for your pincode for your bank account. This is almost an exact copy of the incident with TU Delft that C&CZ reported on January 29. If someone was unwise enough to reply with username and password, then it is wise to change the password immediately. C&CZ will contact users that sent replies through a C&CZ mailserver and has blocked mail to the "@hotmail.co.uk" mail-adres in question on their smtp-servers.

Acrobat Reader, new version with problems
- Printing from Adobe Reader to a HP4250/HP4350 printer doesn't work. According to Adobe this is a fault of the software in these HP printers. As an alternative one can use the dali printer in HG00.201 or one of the colour printers (HP or Tektronix). The Ricoh multifunctional copier/printer/scanners that will be placed soon in several locations to replace the Oce copiers do not have this problem.
