Miro printer: end of maintenance contract

Year after year some users preferred the Xerox Phaser color printer miro over the Ricoh Aficio laserprinters for its different (wax) color technique. It is not possible to have a maintenance contract in 2013 for miro. That doesn't mean that it's impossible to use miro, but it does mean that miro will be removed when a major hardware failure occurs in 2013. The plan is to have new multifunctionals all over the RU in the first half of 2013.

New TeX Live for Windows managed pc

On the S-disk texlive2012 has been installed, next to it we have added texmaker, texmaker is a LaTeX editor. To set the paths to the underlying programs in texmaker, one can use a predefined settings file. Start S:\texmaker\texmaker.exe and then choose Options menu -> Settings File -> "Replace the settings file by a new one", then select S:\texmaker\texmaker.ini and click OK. You only have to do this once if you use a roaming profile, otherwise you have to repeat this every time you login, see Dhz.

Affected : Users of horde webmail and users wanting to send mail to e.g.

Horde webmail again appeared to be misused for sending spam. This could happen because a naive user gave the Science password to phishers/spammers. After first stopping horde, early Friday morning we disabled the account of the naive user and restarted horde. Saturday morning it appeared that this short spam-outbreak had caused administrators of to add our mail server to their blacklist. Therefore we switched the IP-number of this mail server Saturday morning.

Phishing mail: Update Your Web Mailbox

Recently a number of employees of the Faculty of Science received a phishing email with the subject "Update Your Web Mailbox !!!" This email is supposedly sent by "Science.Ru.Nl Administrator" and tries to lure the recipients into giving away their login credentials. It is not the first time we see a phishing attack specifically aimed at Science-users and it will most probably not be the last time either. The mail contains a link to a shortened URL under . If you fall for this and click on the link it leads you to a (now deleted) Google Docs site. If you are gullible enough to log in with your Science (or RU) credentials, then these become known to Internet criminals. This means that your account and all of your files and email are accessible by those criminals. This can go undetected for a long time until the user credentials are abused in such a way that the effects becomes visible. Usually the criminals try to use the user credentials to send spam via our mail servers, as recently happened. This is something we notice; in such a case C&CZ will disable the user account a.s.a.p. to prevent further abuse of the account and to prevent our mail servers from ending up on black lists.

End of life of transparency printer nicolas

Year after year the inkjet transparency printer nicolas was used to produce good-looking color transparencies. Because the printer shows a hardware problem and is used only very seldom, we decided to remove the printer. If one still needs to print transparancies, one can use *laserprinter compatible* transparancies in the laserprinters.

Laptop pool

As of October 2012, the Faculty of Science will have a pool of 64 laptops that can be borrowed by employees and students of this Faculty. There are 64 standard-RU laptops (HP Probook 6560b). The laptops can be reserved and borrowed at the Library of Science. Reservations for Faculty education purposes have precedence, especially for the groups that contributed financially to the pool: PUC of Science and the Chemistry Lab. It is also possible to borrow complete laptop trolleys containing around 21 laptops. There are lending regulations. Individuals who borrow a laptop need to sign a lending agreement. The laptops can be used anywhere in the faculty, e.g. on the mezzanine; a study landscape without desktop pc's that will be opened soon.

Old pc clearance 2012

Update, September 27: All PCs have gone. Next year there will probably be a PC clearance again.

From September 24, old PCs can be obtained from C&CZ. These PCs have served about 5 years in the computer labs and were replaced last summer. All hard drives have been removed. Employees and students of the Faculty of Science interested in obtaining one of these PCs can make an appointment by mailing the C&CZ helpdesk.

New printer 'toorop' near central mezzanine

A new b/w laser printer 'toorop', an HP LaserJet 9050 PCL 6, has been installed near HG01.038, between the two central stairs on the first floor of the Huygens building. Soon the mezzanine next to it will be opened, a study landscape without desktop pc's, suited for laptop usage. There are more than 60 network and power outlets. The network outlets will be opened up when the test with 802.1x network authentication has been done. Until then, only the wireless network can be used. Two new wireless-N access points ought to give enough connectivity.

Mobile telephony in and around the Huygens building

Mobile enterprise telephony with Vodafone Wireless Office (VWO) is offered as a service as of today. The indoor coverage of the Vodafone mobile network in all of the Huygens building is good enough to go forward with VWO. There are plans to improve the coverage in the cellars and the buildings around the Huygens building (Logistiek Centrum, NMR, HFML, FEL and Nanolab). The earlier expected connection of KPN and T-mobile to the Distributed Antenna System that was installed for this, is still uncertain. Our telephony page contains all info about VWO (mobile calling and being reachable with RI-internal 5-digit numbers, also outside of the campus. You can also find info about IP-telephony there. IP-telephony (desktop) and VWO (cell-phone) are the future of RU-telephony.

Eduroam incoming working again

The UCI network administrators told us that in the month April Eduroam-incoming from a different Eduroam institution did not work. Never ignore a certificate warning!

If a program complains about an incorrect certificate of e.g. a website, then never ignore this, but report this to C&CZ a.s.a.p.. The reason to give this warning is a recent complaint of a browser, that pointed to a contaminated laptop, that launched an ARP spoofing attack. The idea behind such an attack is to listen to network traffic in order to e.g. obtain passwords.

Recommendations after hack

The popular Dutch news website has been compromised and altered to serve a malicious worm to those who visited it on March 14, 2012 between 11:30 and 12:30. PC's with older versions of Adobe Reader and Java may have been infected with the Sinowal worm, that is designed to steal passwords, online banking information and other sensitive data. We heard reports that up-to-date installations of F-Secure Client Security blocked this malware. According to ComputerIdee only a few security software suites recognized this malware. The version of Hitmanpro mentioned there has been copied to the Install network share, for employees and students who want to scan their PC.

General recommendations to limit risks:

  • Always update all software, especially browsers, mail clients and software used to show content from the Internet: Java, PDF-readers (Adobe, ...), Office suites, Flash, ...
  • Never trust a compromised system again: Clean the Master Boot Record, e.g. with TDSSkiller by Kaspersky and do a fresh install of the OS, with all updates available.

Please use ru-wlan instead of Science wireless!

In the near future the wireless access points in the Huygens building and the buildings around it, will be replaced by new ones, based on a new technique. The Science wireless network will then no longer be available. Therefore please switch over to using the ru-wlan wireless network, that is available before and after. One can use ru-wlan with U-number and RU-password, but also with and Science-password. After the switch, faster (wireless-N) access points wille be used in busy areas. After the switch the eduroam wireless network will be available too, one can use that with and RU-password, but also with and Science-password. Before the switch, eduroam is only available near the Huygens building on the terrace behind the restaurant. In the future ru-wlan will be switched off, only eduroam will survive. Furthermore, there is a plan to have more wireless access outside of the Huygens building, i.e. at the central entrance and the grass behind the Huygens building.

Split-view DNS could influence Internet at home

Anyone using at home a nameserver like, should remove these DNS-servers from the list of DNS-servers, because we started using split-view DNS. Never react to an e-mail that asks for your password!

A few days ago one of our users replied to an e-mail that apparently was sent by "support" and asked for username and password. This account was later misused to send hundred thousands spam-mails through our mail server. This resulted in the blacklisting of our outgoing mail server in e.g. the blacklists of Windows Live Hotmail. The fastest way to remedy this is to give our outgoing mail server a different IP-address, which we did this morning. Lesson: Never reply to an e-mail that asks for your username and password! RU password reset for employees

With your U-number (personnel number) and RU-password you can login to RU webapplications. Probably you know you can ask for a password reset via C&CZ in case you loose your RU-password. Please bring your peronnel pass or other id in that case. Are you also aware of the possibility to get an activationcode by sms? To enable this functionality, please once register two questions at More info on and We strongly recommend this do-it-yourself method.

Removing old addresses helps block spam!

The last few days some users receive more spam than normally. In many cases the spam has been sent to an old email-address. On the Do It Yourself website you can see what old addresses you still have. If you send a mail to with the list of addresses you want removed, that can make a big difference for you. A plan is being made to remove all addresses, but maybe you would like your old addresses to be removed sooner.

IT Security Campaign at the Faculty of Science

In April, May and June, C&CZ, GDI and UCI carry out an IT security campaign throughout Radboud University. During the campaign, extra attention will be paid to matters such as security software, keeping all software up-to-date, using Blackboard more secure, how to choose a safe password, how to use USB-sticks securely and 'phishing'. The campaign at the Faculty of Science started on Monday, May 23. On the RU IT security site you can find much more information about IT security. Everything under the motto: RU Secure!

F-Secure security software, free for home use too!

Some employees and students may be unaware that the F-Secure security software can be used freely, also at home. License codes for F-Secure can be found on Radboudnet.

USB-sticks causing infections

Many PC infections occur because the malware on a USB-stick is automatically started when you connect it to the PC, resulting in an infected PC. You can prevent this from happening by disabling the ‘autorun’-option on the PC.

Ben Polman 25 mei 2011 13:57 (UTC)

Sometimes even university staff and students are tricked into replying to a phishing email: you receive an email that looks like someone from support asks to reply with your password, to prevent your email account from being blocked. Never reply to these fake senders! Support personnel would never ask you for your password!

Lock screen when leaving the room!

Leaving your office for a few minutes? Then make sure to have your screen locked! If you leave your computer unattended (using no screensaver with password protection) and your room hasn't been locked, there is a chance that the data on your PC could be compromised, or that illegal actions could be carried out by someone. During the campaign, we will devote extra attention to unattended PC’s. You might be surprised to find a 'static' sticker on your monitor. You can turn on screen lock on a Windows computer by pressing the Windows and the L-button simultaneously.

Virus scanning software on Install share

During the IT security campaign, USB sticks with virus scanning software and playing cards of Cybersave Yourself have been distributed. The virusscanner software of the USB-stick has been copied to the Install share.

Spamming PC's noticed faster

CERT-RU, that coordinates RU IT-security incidents, regularly receives reports about PC's that are distributing spam mail. Often these have been noticed by Senderbase, because the daily mail volume has been much larger than the monthly average. The routers at the Science Faculty log the initialization of an SMTP-connection outside Radboud University. Therefore spamming PC's often already have been cleaned when CERT-RU gets noticed by an outside party.

Changes in IT services

On September 1, 2009 GDI (Gebruikersdienst ICT) was formed by combining the former Computer Support Groups (COG's) of the various faculties and clusters of our university. Because of the special role of IT for FNWI, C&CZ continued to exist as the IT service group for FNWI.

Based on a formal decision of the Executive Board all standard Windows workstations and student PC's campus wide will be transferred to GDI. C&CZ will remain responsible for all other IT services in this faculty. At the moment GDI is preparing the transfer of the Windows workstations of the service departments as well as all course PC's. Users will be informed in time about the consequences of these changes. Until the takeover, which will take place in steps, C&CZ will remain responsible for all IT services for FNWI and will remain reachable through the well known channels.

Ubuntu login server

In the process of gradually replacing Fedora by Ubuntu, there have been several Ubuntu clients and servers installed. One of these is an experimental Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) login server for general use.

The choice for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) has been made because of the L(ong) T(ime) S(upport), 3 years for desktops and 5 years for servers. This in contrast to approximately 1 year updates and support for Fedora. Software, commonly used within the faculty, is available.

More likely than not, packages or programs will be missing or work in slightly different ways than on a Fedora system. It's also possible that settings for Fedora might cause problems on the Ubuntu systems. Please do not hesitate to report problems. Regrettably, we cannot garantee that all problems can or will be solved immediately.

New names for Linux login servers

Currently the login servers are named (LInux LOgin server) and However, the actual machines have different names, and respectively. This leads to confusion with some of our users. To address this issue we will phase out and rename some machines.

The oldest server will be phased out no sooner than can take over. The current Fedora login server will be renamed to

The name lilo will eventually become an alias for the fastest login server and the name stitch will, for the time being, become an alias for lilo2. Whenever replacing login servers, new machine will receive a successive number, so lilo3, lilo4, etc.

Microsoft Office 2007

Currently the default office software on campus is Microsoft Office 2007. We tried to install this software on as many PC's as possible. If you still use an older version of Office then we would advise to install Microsoft Office 2007.

If your PC is owned by the university than you are allowed to use the campus license and you can borrow the software from our department or do the installation directly from the install disk (\\\install).

For privately owned PCs you can buy the software at a reduced price at Surfspot.

Windows print server

A new Windows 2008 printer server has been installed to support departemental printing. The server is named This server can support printing from Windows XP, Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit) and Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit). Printer drivers are automatically installed by connecting to the printer server and selecting the print queue.

  • Currently very little problems occurred

  • Only for standard, frequent installed, common available printers (HP LaserJet, Xerox, Ricoh)
  • Little protection against abuse
  • Cannot make use of the CnCZ print budget software, so no accounting or print budget facilities

This implies that only printers that are not publically available should be considered adding to this server. Please contact CnCZ to figure out if a printer is suitable for installation.

See Printers_en_printen for an explanation how to connect printers.

New mail/calendar service Share

The UCI has developed a new combined mail and calendar service for the RU. The service called Share is based on the open standards product Zimbra. Save settings on B-FAC PC's

If you want to save your user settings when logging in on the PC's in study landscape, computer labs, etc., you have to login to the Do-It-Yourself website and check in Profile: "Roaming profile for B-FAC domain". This makes logging in a bit slower, because all user settings have to be copied from a server. The advantage is that all user settings are saved when logging out. An example of such a user setting is the trust of all "" sites in the NoScript extension for Firefox, that is necessary to use e.g. Blackboard. New logins from now on will get a roaming profile in all domains.

Copy cards go away

The copy cards with a magnet strip, that can be used with the multifunctional copiers, will go away, starting in a few months. The first few months this system can only be used by students, so the other Science-multifunctionals will be switched to this new system later. Departments are advised to keep less copy cards in stock.

C&CZ then can decide about the purchase of a new printer.

When asked for password through mail: do not react!

Every so often our users receive phishing-mail, in which a prompt response with username and password is requested. C&CZ likes to stress *again* that it is not very wise to believe something just because is written in a letter or e-mail and that *no official institution* will ever ask you for your password, just like a bank never will ask you for your pincode for your bank account. If a naive user falls for this scheme, his account is normally soon thereafter misused to send spam, with the effect that our mailservers are included in blacklists, causing problems for all users.

Microsoft Office 2007

C&CZ will deploy Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise to all Managed PC's. Up till now Office2007 was only installed on request of departments, because of the completely different look and feel and compatibility issues. Office2007 will be installed on the Study Landscape PC's shortly, the PC rooms used for courses will follow during the summer holidays.

Departments can contact C&CZ to start an automatic deployment of the software to their managed PC's. For self-administered PC's, one can use the install network disk to install Office 2007. Necessary license codes are mailed by Postmaster on request from a faculty or RU mail-address.

Reduce mail from *-studenten-* mailing lists

Student representatives reported to C&CZ that some students would like to reduce the amount of mails they receive from the Mailman mailing lists. The mailing lists for students are the umbrella list fnwi-studenten, and the lists per discipline and year that make up the umbrella list. Therefore C&CZ changed the configuration of the -studenten- mailing lists, so digests (summaries) for the -students- mailing lists are only mailed once a week. Of course this only has an effect for students who have selected to prefer to be mailed a digest instead of receiving every mail separately. For all other Mailman mailinglists a digest is mailed once a day. The digest option can be selected per user per mailing list, e.g. on the -studenten-discipline/year mailing list website, through "change your subscription options".

Roaming user profiles for Windows can be enabled and disabled

On the Do-It-Yourself-website it is possible to enable and disable roaming user profiles for the domains NWI and B-FAC. The default is to use roaming profiles for the NWI domain and not for the B-FAC domain. In general logging on and off will be a little bit faster without using a roaming user profile, but a disadvantage is that user settings will not be saved. Examples of user settings that wil not be saved are the Desktop backgound image, documents stored on the Desktop, Email settings, 'Favorites', 'Recent Documents', etc. Without a roaming profile documents that are placed on the desktop will not be saved!

Linux cups server and printing using Kerberos tickets

To print from Linux to a budgetted printer you had to type your account password for every print job. Sometimes this was problematic if the application was not started from a terminal window. Now there is a CUPS-server which demands a valid Kerberos ticket, so you do not need to type your password for every print job. Managed Linux PCs running Fedora 8 and above already use this CUPS-server. A Kerberos ticket granting ticket can be obtained by typing kinit.

We will try to extend this CUPS-server in such a way it can be used for Windows IPP-printing.

Old pc's for sale to Science employees and students

In January, all 5 year old pc's in pc rooms and study landscape have been replaced by new ones. Departments of the Science Faculty have already had the opportunity to express their interest in these old pc's. C&CZ still has a few dozen left, which are now offered to individual employees and students of the Science Faculty, almost without any guarantee. When interested, contact C&CZ (Helpdesk, Theo Neuij/Mathieu Bouwens, 20000). Specifications: Dell Optiplex SX280; Pentium 4 dual core processor 2.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB hard disc, including (attached) 17" TFT-flatscreen, keyboard and mouse.

Web application for employee attendance

Within various service departments of the Faculty of Science, a web application for employee attendance (time registration) is used. This application is based on the open source system TimeTrex. Other departments that are interested in using the system for one or more employees, should contact C&CZ. Registration is done with passes or on the web. It can be helpful for the administration of variable working hours. It is a somewhat flexible system, that e.g. can also be switched to automatically register attendance, which makes it into a (sick) leave registration system. There is no interface (yet) with the RU BASS-HRM registration of (sick) leave, which has to be updated at least quarterly.

Saving time when making appointments (manage calendars)

If you spend a lot of time planning appointments, especially with stable and/or big lists of employees, please read on.

The last few weeks, the Faculty Office succesfully tested the Mozilla SunBird calendar software. At this moment, with this software one can view the free/busy information of a few dozen employees that are using Outlook, Google Calendar or a Science Faculty E-Groupware calendar.

If you are interested in using this calendar software, we would like to hear from you, with a list of persons with whom you most often make (group) appointments. These persons can change their calender settings themselves.

Radboud University intends to migrate in 2010 to a modern mail/agenda system for all employees and students. This system can be used with a nice webclient, but also with Outlook, Thunderbird etc. This should make planning appointments with RU employees really simple and efficient. If you can wait for this new system, you do not have to react of course.

BASS on Mac and Linux

The use of the BASS (Oracle) concern applications for HRM and financial transactions is supported only on some Windows platforms. However because BASS is essentially a Java application running from a browser it should function just as well from other platforms such as Macs and Linux systems. Indeed we were able to place an order through BASS from a Linux (Fedora 11) system and we've heard that for some people BASS also works from a Mac. For those who are not afraid to experiment a little we have collected a few hints on our BASS page which may help you to get things going.

Replacement of pc's in pc rooms

In the third week of January, in total 122 pc's in pc rooms TK149/TK153, Biology Lab TK329 and the study landscape will be replaced by new ones. The inconvenience for students will be minimal in this week. Departments can contact C&CZ (Theo Neuij, 56666) if they are interested in acquiring a number of these more than 5 year old pc's.

PCs in the Library of Science accessible by all RU students

As of December 23, 2009 all students of Radboud University can logon to the PCs in the Library of Science in the Huygens building with their RU account (s-number). Make sure to choose the RU logon domain at the logon screen.

Please Note:

  • Personal configuration settings are not preserved between sessions on these PCs.
  • Only the black-and-white printers in the vicinity of the library are automatically available. Other printers need to be configured manually for each session. For instructions please come to the library front desk.

FNWI students and staff can also logon with their science account (domain B-fac), yet without their personal profile. However, the U-network drive with their personal data is available. On PC's in the terminal rooms the personal profiles are still available.

In January the PCs in the Studielandschap will be replaced by brand new hardware. The new PCs will be accessible by all RU students.

New Comodo certificates with Windows Mobile 6.1 problem

The new Comodo certificates, that were announced in May, are gradually being used by RU-servers. The expectation that these certificates would be "popup free", has not been completely fulfilled: users with a Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone are advised to check the presence of the Comodo SSL root certificate. Without this root certificate, usage of the secure wireless network or secure RU-websites will become impossible.

Backup tape robots upgraded

C&CZ has upgraded its two 5 year old LTO2 (200 Gb/tape uncompressed) 8-Tape Library units to two LTO4 (800 Gb/tape uncompressed) 24-Tape Library units. We named them R2D2 and C3PO. This upgrade not only increases the backup capacity by a factor of 12, which is necessary because more and more data needs to be backupped. It also speeds up the backup and restore times because the drives are faster and the manual operational overhead is reduced.

In the near future we will be looking for a new destination for our old but still trustworthy LTO2 units. If you are interested please mail to postmaster at

The Trooster Award 2009 has been awarded to Remco Aalbers. One of the systems he developed is the web application RUMBA (RU Master Bachelor) for creating and consulting course information. Some other highlights of his work: the education pressure report system ROB, the experimental student portfolio, the Virtual Classroom for Biology and the wiki’s. The presentation of the award was Friday December 18, 16:00 hours in HG00.304. In his presentation Aalbers didn't expand on the developed systems, but explained his method of development: Agile software development of web applications based on open standards and open source.

Valid e-mail in Spam folder

On 7 december, during the regular update of the spamfilter, a new filter set turned out to tag too many valid messages as spam. Therefore some valid mail ended up in people's Spam folders, so-called false positives. Please search your Spam folder (a subfolder of Inbox) for false positives. It is advisable to do so once a week even under normal circumstances if you do not want to miss any mail, but for December 7 and 8 there is a direct reason to do so.

Additional information on our virus and spam filtering and the personal settings, is available.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Power outage in computer room

On December 13 2009 at 18:50 we suffered a power outage in our computer room *behind* the UPS, that is meant to shield the servers from problems with the electricity grid. The UVB investigates the cause of the problem. The outage caused the failure of several file servers, web servers (including squirrel), one of the LDAP servers, etc. All systems have been reconnected to a different power supply and at 10:20 all systems were started. In the next hour all services should become available again.

Linux print problem and change

The FSR reported a security problem with printing on Fedora Linux, that made it possible to print using the budget of a different user. As a temporary emergency solution, one has to supply a password when printing login server, like lilo and stitch, to a budgeted printer. See the print information to print from within an application that doesn't ask for a password. A final solution, the deployment of a central CUPS-server, couldn't be realized in a very short timeframe. Thanks to the FSR for reporting this problem.

Linux login servers: upgrade and addition

The operating system of the general purpose Linux login server lilo (formally has been upgraded to Fedora 11. Also a second Linux login server named stitch (formally is now available. Lilo and stitch are identical as far as the software is concerned but stitch has newer, more powerful hardware (8 cores, 2.5 GHz each, 8GB internal memory). In case of a problem with one of these servers the other one serves as backup. These changes were initiated because of a security issue on lilo before the upgrade and agree with our goal to eliminate the old Solaris login servers solo and solost eventually. Internet domain name registration/relocation

C&CZ has recently obtained a partner account at domain name registrar QDC, allowing us to register a .nl, .com, .org or .eu domain name quickly and easily. The (technical) administration of such a domain name is controlled by C&CZ (the C&CZ Internet domain name servers). In this way Radboud University Nijmegen becomes the owner of the domain name instead of an individual employee of a department). Relocation of existing domain names to the registrar QDC is also possible, but will involve some additional paperwork, see the domain name registration page for additional details.

At the same time the number of pc's has been increased by 27 to accommodate the larger number of students. Both rooms are dual-boot: every pc can be used with Microsoft Windows or with Fedora Linux. By waiting for the lower prices of the standard supplier, that were a result of the European tender of pc's, thousands of euro's could be saved. The plan is to replace the other about hundred pc's that were bought for the pc-rooms in 2004, at the time of the completion of the first phase of the Huygens building, at the end of 2009.

1234567890 seconds since The Epoch

Next Saturday February 14 at 00:31:30 local time the time counter that is commonly used in the Unix world, i.e. the number of seconds since January 1, 1970 UTC ('The Epoch'), reaches the pleasing value of 1234567890. Perhaps even more exciting is the fact that in the early morning of January 19, 2038 the counter reaches the maximum value that can be stored in a 32 bit signed integer. Luckily there still is enough time to find a solution for this daunting challenge compared to which the Y2K problem was just a stroll in the park.

Again power failure server room HG04.070

Saturday Jan 31 around 03:00h the power supply fire protection unit in the server room HG04.070 was activated again, which caused the immediate and complete power down of all servers in that room. This time as well no sensor had detected a temperature high enough to activate the protection unit.

There was no extra information available to determine a more definitive cause for the immediate 'Emergency Stop' of the UPS unit.

To prevent a new faulty fire alarm event, only one (1) temporary, mechanical temperature switch, can activate the UPS 'Emergency Stop'.

The complete fire alarm power switching unit with 4 temperature senors has been disconnected from the UPS 'Emergency Stop'. This system is still working and is still connected to and monitored by the building alarm system.

It has been discovered that every door entrance has a fire-key-switch, directly connected to the UPS 'Emergency Stop'. These switches were not connected to the building alarm system. The switches are now disconnected from the UPS 'Emergency Stop' and are now connected to and monitored by the building alarm system.

This setup ensures that:

  • there still is a working fire power protection unit, be it with a only one slow sensor at one place (near the hot spot).
  • a failure in the old circuit of the door switches will be detected, but cannot cause a UPS 'Emergency Stop'.
  • it will be clear when an UPS internal problem is the cause of an UPS 'Emergency Stop'.

Depending on future alarms, new information will come available to explain power failures and their causes.

It is agreed that the current situation will remain in place for at least two months unless an alarm occurs.

Power failure server room HG04.070

January 20, around 10:45h, the power supply fire protection unit in the server room HG04.070 was activated, which caused an immediate and complete power down of all servers in that room.

Through bypassing the protection unit, power could be switched on again, first partially and fully functional again about 12:00h.

Then the fixing hardware and software problems resulting from the immediate shutdown could be started. This took several hours for some systems. Work on the student file server lasted until the morning of January 21.

Around 18:00h the protection unit was activated again with a larger margin for the room temperature.

A week ago a too naive colleague reacted to a phishing mail by sending his loginname and password. That made it impossible for that server to send mail to some organisations. C&CZ managed computers have been updated to the latest version. C&CZ advises everybody to upgrade to version if not already done. Testing can be done through the Adobe testpage and holding the mouse above "About". For even more browser security one can quite easily install the Firefox extension NoScript.

Removing old mail addresses helps prevent spam

At this time (May 2008) we often see that suddenly a lot of spam is sent from different places on the Internet, with a (fake) sender address of the old "" form. For the owner of such an address this gives some trouble, since the spam that cannot be delivered wiil come "back" to the sender address that was used. To help prevent this, it is a good idea to look in the DIY website which old "" addresses can be removed and mail that to postmaster.

Standard RU-laptop chosen

Recently the RU hardware specification team has added to the standard PC from the "core hardware" from the default supplier also a standard RU-laptop: the HP6710b. There are 2 versions, the more expensive one has at least a faster processor, a bigger hard disk a screen with higher resolution and standard more memory. C&CZ currently works on making it possible to use these laptops as "Windows managed laptop", comparable to the [[Windows_beheerde_werkplek|Windows managed PC].

Network upgrade successful

Sunday morning April 20 between 09:30 and 11:30 hours the router/switch that couples the networks on the Toernooiveld with each other and with the rest of the RU campus network (and by that with Surfnet/Internet), was replaced by a new, more powerful machine. The work was planned by C&CZ en UCI to cause minimal trouble for employees and students.

The next few weeks other changes to the network will be made, but the trouble this will cause will be much less.

Some aspects of this upgrade: 1 router/switch that is spread over 2 locations, with 10Gb uplinks to the UCI. The router/switch can provide better protection since it has more room for "access control lists"and by using "reverse path forwarding". By using FlexLinks desktop switches can easily be connected redundantly. Cascades of desktop switches can be split, since more interfaces are available. Also antique connections to remote locations can be upgraded.

About the new network (NiNe) the UCI reported in the Enter magazine

RU now victim of phishing scam too (mail asking for password)

Now also a lot of RU employees received emails, that at first sight looked as if they were sent by a RU Helpdesk, in which was asked for a reply with loginname and password. The reply of a naive user again went to a "" mail-address. C&CZ likes to stress again that *no official institution* will ever ask you for your password, just like a bank never will ask you for your pincode for your bank account. This is almost an exact copy of the incident with TU Delft that C&CZ reported on January 29. C&CZ will contact users that sent replies through a C&CZ mailserver and has blocked mail to the "" mail-adres in question on their smtp-servers.

Acrobat Reader, new version with problems

On all Managed PCs version 7 of Adobe Reader has been replaced by version 8.1.1, because of a security hole. The upgrade lead to several problems:

  1. Printing from Adobe Reader to a HP4250/HP4350 printer doesn't work. According to Adobe this is a fault of the software in these HP printers. As an alternative one can use the dali printer in HG00.201 or one of the colour printers (HP or Tektronix). The Ricoh multifunctional copier/printer/scanners that will be placed soon in several locations to replace the Oce copiers do not have this problem.
  2. PCs with a license for Adobe Professional do not (yet?) have a license to upgrade, but having Adobe Professional version 7 and Reader version 8 at the same time doesn't work.
