Phishing mail: Update Your Web Mailbox !!!
Since recently members of the Faculty of Science receive a phishing email with the subject "Update Your Web Mailbox!" and a signature "Science.Ru.Nl Administrator". Peter van Campen 27 sep 2012 11:33 (CEST)
End of life of transparency printer nicolas
Year after year the inkjet transparency printer nicolas was used to produce good-looking color transparencies. Because the printer shows a hardware problem and is used only very seldom, we decided to remove the printer. If one still needs to print transparancies, one can use *laserprinter compatible* transparancies in the laserprinters.

Starting October 2012, the Faculty of Science will have a pool of 64 laptops that can be borrowed by employees and students of the Faculty. There are 64 standard-RU laptops (HP Probook 6560b). Reserving the laptops will be through the Library of Science. Reservations for Faculty education have precedence, especially by groups that paid for the laptops (PUC of Science and Chemistry Lab). They will in general borrow complete laptop trolleys. There are lending regulations. Individual borrowers need to sign a lending agreement. There is a page with user information. The laptops can e.g. be used on the mezzanine, a study landscape without desktop pc's, that will be opened soon.

Please update Internet Explorer!
Update September 24: Microsoft released an update for Internet Explorer. We urge you to install this update before using Internet Explorer to browse the Internet. September 19: Due to a new vulnerability in Internet Explorer (versions 6 through 9,it is advised not to use Internet Explorer to browse the Internet. Visiting not-contaminated websites within ru.nl of course is still possible. Use an alternative like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Without installation one can use Firefox Portable.

New printer 'toorop' near central mezzanine
A new b/w laser printer 'toorop', an HP LaserJet 9050 PCL 6, has been installed near HG01.038, between the two central stairs on the first floor of the Huygens building. Soon the mezzanine next to it will be opened, a study landscape without desktop pc's, suited for laptop usage. There are more than 60 network and power outlets. The network outlets will be opened up when the test with 802.1x network authentication has been done. Until then, only the wireless network can be used. Two wireless-N access points ought to give enough connectivity.

Mobile telephony in and around the Huygens building
Mobile enterprise telephony with Vodafone Wireless Office (VWO) is offered as a service as of today. The indoor coverage of the Vodafone mobile network in all of the Huygens building is good enough to go forward with VWO. There are plans to improve the coverage in the cellars and the buildings around the Huygens building (Logistiek Centrum, NMR, HFML, FEL and Nanolab). The earlier expected connection of KPN and T-mobile to the Distributed Antenna System that was installed for this, is still uncertain. Our telephony page contains all info about VWO (mobile calling and being reachable with RI-internal 5-digit numbers, also outside of the campus. You can also find info about IP-telephony there. IP-telephony (desktop) and VWO (cell-phone) are the future of RU-telephony.

New print server for 64-bit Windows7
Because we upgraded the computer labs from Windows-XP to 64-bit Windows7, we had to install a new printserver, with the name 'printto.science.ru.nl'. For all budgetted printers this server must be used. See our printer page for detailed information how to attach a printer ffrom this server.

Windows7 and Linux Ubuntu 12.04 in all computer labs
During the summer break, C&CZ has reinstalled all pc's in computer labs (including college and colloquium rooms), with new versions of Windows (7) and Ubuntu Linux (12.04). Existing software (for Windows on the S: and T: discs) is available, but has not always been tested. For Windows7, there is a list of installed software.
Please report all problems a.s.a.p. to C&CZ, e.g. by mailing to , to give us time to solve problems.

Phishing mail: Geweldig nieuws!
From May 31, RU-personnel receives phishing mail with subject "Geweldig nieuws!". A link in the mail points to a shortened URL of http://goo.gl/. If one falls for this and clicks the link, then one is redirected to a Google Docs site, that looks like it could be a RU site. If one is stupid enough to enter the U-number and RU-password, then these are at that moment given to internet criminals. They can use this to e.g. try to send spam.

End of life of free lineprinter lp5

Eduroam incoming working again
The UCI network administrators told us that in the month April Eduroam-incoming from a different Eduroam institution did not work. Reason for this was a change in the way Eduroam-requests entered the UCI. This has been corrected at the end of April. Authenticating to Eduroam, as explained on our wireless network page, is possible with U-number and with Science loginname.

Never ignore a certificate warning!
If a program complains about an incorrect certificate of e.g. a website, then never ignore this, but report this to C&CZ a.s.a.p.. The reason to give this warning is a recent complaint of a browser, that pointed to a contaminated laptop, that launched an ARP spoofing attack. The idea behind such an attack is to listen to network traffic in order to e.g. obtain passwords.

Recommendations after nu.nl hack
The popular Dutch news website NU.nl has been compromised and altered to serve a malicious worm to those who visited it on March 14, 2012 between 11:30 and 12:30. PC's with older versions of Adobe Reader and Java may have been infected with the Sinowal worm, that is designed to steal passwords, online banking information and other sensitive data. We heard reports that up-to-date installations of F-Secure Client Security blocked this malware. According to ComputerIdee only a few security software suites recognized this malware. The version of Hitmanpro mentioned there has been copied to the Install network share, for employees and students who want to scan their PC.
General recommendations to limit risks:
- Always update all software, especially browsers, mail clients and software used to show content from the Internet: Java, PDF-readers (Adobe, ...), Office suites, Flash, ...
- Never trust a compromised system again: Clean the Master Boot Record, e.g. with TDSSkiller by Kaspersky and do a fresh install of the OS, with all updates available.

New Matlab license server (old one goes away!) and Matlab R2012a
There is a new license server for the use of Matlab. Users entitled to a license can request the new license codes by sending a mail to postmaster. The old license server will be brought down in the not too distant future, so to avoid problems, all installations of Matlab have to be updated, also older versions! The latest version of Matlab, R2012a, is available for departments that have bought licenses. The software and license codes can be acquired through a mail to postmaster for those entitled to it. The software can also be found on the install-disc. The C&CZ-managed 64-bit Linux machines have this version installed, an older version (/opt/matlab-R2011b/bin/matlab) is still available temporarily. The C&CZ-managed Windows machines will receive this version too.

Please use ru-wlan instead of Science wireless!
In the near future the wireless access points in the Huygens building and the buildings around it, will be replaced by new ones, based on a new technique. The Science wireless network will then no longer be available. Therefore please switch over to using the ru-wlan wireless network, that is available before and after. One can use ru-wlan with U-number and RU-password, but also with and Science-password. After the switch, faster (wireless-N) access points wille be used in busy areas. After the switch the eduroam wireless network will be available too, one can use that with and RU-password, but also with and Science-password. Before the switch, eduroam is only available near the Huygens building on the terrace behind the restaurant. In the future ru-wlan will be switched off, only eduroam will survive. Furthermore, there is a plan to have more wireless access outside of the Huygens building, i.e. at the central entrance and the grass behind the Huygens building.

Which computer lab has free PCs?
Since recently, the website welke.tk shows which computer lab has free pc's. Advantages of this site over the existing current usage page are that it is realtime and that one can immediately see whether a lab is or will be reserved for lectures. The website welke.tk can be viewed on smartphones too. The website has been created by Bas Westerbaan in cooperation with C&CZ, the design was made by Judith van Stegeren, Ruben Nijveld helped with mobile support. The source of the reserved hours is Ruuster.nl.

Network problems after change of January 28 solved
January 28, the UCI network management installed new software and a new configuration on the Science Faculty router, among other things to prepare for IP telephony. The following week some network problems were reported, which have been traced to a high cpu load of the router. After a few temporary measures were taken, on Monday January 28 18:00-18:45 a new configuration was installed, after which the cpu load hasn't been high again and the network problems appear to have been solved more permanently.

Faculty Education Award 2011
The Faculty of Science Education Award 2011 was awarded to C&CZ, for its "long and excellent service record with regards to the provision of support to students and teachers", according to the unanimous jury. The dean, who presented the award, mentioned several developments in the IT infrastructure and the teaching support systems and the close cooperation with staff and students, which makes that products are developed that are needed. Since 2001, the Faculty Education Award is awarded by representatives from the Faculty Student Council and both student and staff faculty degree programme committees. The jury is chaired by the Vice-Dean for Education. The award consists of a certificate and a work of art by Anneke van Bergen. C&CZ is very honoured by this splendid award.

Split-view DNS could influence Internet at home
Anyone using at home a science.ru.nl nameserver like ns1.science.ru.nl, should remove these DNS-servers from the list of DNS-servers, because we started using split-view DNS. With split-view DNS, we can give internal (RU on campus) pc's answers differing from those given to external pc's. The UCI introduced this a few months ago for e.g. the DNS zones ru.nl and heyendaal.net to increase IT security.

Never react to an e-mail that asks for your password!
A few days ago one of our users replied to an e-mail that apparently was sent by "support" and asked for username and password. This account was later misused to send hundred thousands spam-mails through our mail server. This resulted in the blacklisting of our outgoing mail server in e.g. the blacklists of Windows Live Hotmail. The fastest way to remedy this is to give our outgoing mail server a different IP-address, which we did this morning. Lesson: Never reply to an e-mail that asks for your username and password! It causes a lot of trouble for us and other users.

BASS and single logon
For security reasons direct access to the concern application BASS used to be blocked, even from within the RU internal network; one had to logon to the Port Forwarder first which meant two logons in a row. With the RU central firewall in place the first logon is not necessary anymore (although still possible) for PC's which are located behind the firewall from a network topology point of view. A significant amount of the PC's in FNWI have already been relocated behind the firewall. Versioning of text and source code: Subversion hosting
Are you developing software? Do you write code? You've probably created some zip files of working versions to fall back to. Sounds familiar? You can now use the Subversion service of C&CZ. Subversion supports you with versioning of source code files. Using Subversion, progress becomes visible and there's always an 'undo button'. Ultimately, it's a nice way to manage any kind of collaborative work where multiple individuals are editing the same files. The Subversion service is available for people with a Science account. Repository access is also possible for people from outside the faculty.

Removing old kun.nl addresses helps block spam!
The last few days some users receive more spam than normally. In many cases the spam has been sent to an old kun.nl email-address. On the Do It Yourself website you can see what old addresses you still have. If you send a mail to with the list of addresses you want removed, that can make a big difference for you. A plan is being made to remove all kun.nl addresses, but maybe you would like your old addresses to be removed sooner.

IT Security Campaign at the Faculty of Science
In April, May and June, C&CZ, GDI and UCI carry out an IT security campaign throughout Radboud University. During the campaign, extra attention will be paid to matters such as security software, keeping all software up-to-date, using Blackboard more secure, how to choose a safe password, how to use USB-sticks securely and 'phishing'. The campaign at the Faculty of Science started on Monday, May 23. On the RU IT security site you can find much more information about IT security. Everything under the motto: RU Secure!

USB-sticks causing infections
Many PC infections occur because the malware on a USB-stick is automatically started when you connect it to the PC, resulting in an infected PC. You can prevent this from happening by disabling the ‘autorun’-option on the PC.
Ben Polman 25 mei 2011 13:57 (UTC)
Sometimes even university staff and students are tricked into replying to a phishing email: you receive an email that looks like someone from support asks to reply with your password, to prevent your email account from being blocked. Never reply to these fake senders! Support personnel would never ask you for your password!

Lock screen when leaving the room!
Leaving your office for a few minutes? Then make sure to have your screen locked! If you leave your computer unattended (using no screensaver with password protection) and your room hasn't been locked, there is a chance that the data on your PC could be compromised, or that illegal actions could be carried out by someone. During the campaign, we will devote extra attention to unattended PC’s. You might be surprised to find a 'static' sticker on your monitor. You can turn on screen lock on a Windows computer by pressing the Windows and the L-button simultaneously.

If you want to know how smart you are w.r.t. IT-security, the Security Quiz of Canadian Wilfrid Laurier University can help. Can you get a 100% score there? A quiz with direct feedback can be found at George Mason University, USA.

During the IT security campaign, USB sticks with virus scanning software and playing cards of Cybersave Yourself have been distributed. The virusscanner software of the USB-stick has been copied to the Install share.

Spamming PC's noticed faster
CERT-RU, that coordinates RU IT-security incidents, regularly receives reports about PC's that are distributing spam mail. Often these have been noticed by Senderbase, because the daily mail volume has been much larger than the monthly average. The routers at the Science Faculty log the initialization of an SMTP-connection outside Radboud University. Therefore spamming PC's often already have been cleaned when CERT-RU gets noticed by an outside party.

Changes in IT services
On September 1, 2009 GDI (Gebruikersdienst ICT) was formed by combining the former Computer Support Groups (COG's) of the various faculties and clusters of our university. Because of the special role of IT for FNWI, C&CZ continued to exist as the IT service group for FNWI.
Based on a formal decision of the Executive Board all standard Windows workstations and student PC's campus wide will be transferred to GDI. C&CZ will remain responsible for all other IT services in this faculty. At the moment GDI is preparing the transfer of the Windows workstations of the service departments as well as all course PC's. Users will be informed in time about the consequences of these changes. Until the takeover, which will take place in steps, C&CZ will remain responsible for all IT services for FNWI and will remain reachable through the well known channels.

Ubuntu login server
In the process of gradually replacing Fedora by Ubuntu, there have been several Ubuntu clients and servers installed. One of these is an experimental Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) login server lilo1.science.ru.nl for general use.
The choice for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) has been made because of the L(ong) T(ime) S(upport), 3 years for desktops and 5 years for servers. This in contrast to approximately 1 year updates and support for Fedora. Software, commonly used within the faculty, is available.
More likely than not, packages or programs will be missing or work in slightly different ways than on a Fedora system. It's also possible that settings for Fedora might cause problems on the Ubuntu systems. Please do not hesitate to report problems. Regrettably, we cannot garantee that all problems can or will be solved immediately.

New names for Linux login servers
Currently the login servers are named lilo.science.ru.nl (LInux LOgin server) and stitch.science.ru.nl. However, the actual machines have different names, porthos.science.ru.nl and lijfwacht.science.ru.nl respectively. This leads to confusion with some of our users. To address this issue we will phase out and rename some machines.
The oldest server lilo.science.ru.nl will be phased out no sooner than lilo1.science.ru.nl can take over. The current Fedora login server stitch.science.ru.nl will be renamed to lilo2.science.ru.nl.
The name lilo will eventually become an alias for the fastest login server and the name stitch will, for the time being, become an alias for lilo2. Whenever replacing login servers, new machine will receive a successive number, so lilo3, lilo4, etc.

Microsoft Office 2007
Currently the default office software on campus is Microsoft Office 2007. We tried to install this software on as many PC's as possible. If you still use an older version of Office then we would advise to install Microsoft Office 2007.
If your PC is owned by the university than you are allowed to use the campus license and you can borrow the software from our department or do the installation directly from the install disk (\\install-srv.science.ru.nl\install).
For privately owned PCs you can buy the software at a reduced price at Surfspot.

Windows print server
A new Windows 2008 printer server has been installed to support departemental printing. The server is named drukker.nwi.ru.nl. This server can support printing from Windows XP, Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit) and Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit). Printer drivers are automatically installed by connecting to the printer server and selecting the print queue.
- Currently very little problems occurred
- Only for standard, frequent installed, common available printers (HP LaserJet, Xerox, Ricoh)
- Little protection against abuse
- Cannot make use of the CnCZ print budget software, so no accounting or print budget facilities
This implies that only printers that are not publically available should be considered adding to this server. Please contact CnCZ to figure out if a printer is suitable for installation.
See Printers_en_printen for an explanation how to connect printers.

The UCI has developed a new combined mail and calendar service for the RU. The service called Share is based on the open standards product Zimbra. All RU students and a selection of RU employees are already using Share. Deployment of Share at FNWI depends on the migration of the FNWI Exchange accounts to Share. This migration in turn requires a number of shortcomings in Share to be resolved. At the moment it is unclear when Share will be available for FNWI.

In the first weeks of the new college year, mail sent to new students @student.science.ru.nl, has been forwarded to their Studielink address, because no @student.ru.nl address was available. Save settings on B-FAC PC's
If you want to save your user settings when logging in on the PC's in study landscape, computer labs, etc., you have to login to the Do-It-Yourself website and check in Profile: "Roaming profile for B-FAC domain". This makes logging in a bit slower, because all user settings have to be copied from a server. The advantage is that all user settings are saved when logging out. An example of such a user setting is the trust of all "ru.nl" sites in the NoScript extension for Firefox, that is necessary to use e.g. Blackboard. New logins from now on will get a roaming profile in all domains.

Copy cards go away
The copy cards with a magnet strip, that can be used with the multifunctional copiers, will go away, starting in a few months. To print and copy in the future Peage-systeem, one needs a chip card and a network budget. In the near future the first multifunctional in this new system will be placed in the central hall of the Huygens building. The first few months this system can only be used by students, so the other Science-multifunctionals will be switched to this new system later. Departments are advised to keep less copy cards in stock.
