Test of Ubuntu 20.04 on Linux login server lilo7
As a test of the new version of Ubuntu, 20.04 LTS, we have installed a new login server lilo7.science.ru.nl. In a few months it will replace the four year old login server lilo5. The name lilo, that always points to the newest/fastest login server, will then be moved from the more than two year old lilo6 to the new lilo7. The new lilo7 is a Dell PowerEdge R7515 with 1 AMD 7502P 2.5GHz 32-core processor and 64GB RAM. Because we enabled hyper-threading, it is showing 64 processors. For users who want to check the identity of this new server before supplying their Science-password to the new server, see the section about our loginservers. Please report all problems with this new version of Ubuntu Linux.

Matlab R2020a available
The latest version of Matlab, R2020a, is available for departments that have licenses. The software and license codes can be obtained through a mail to postmaster for those entitled to it. The software can also be found on the install-disc. All C&CZ-managed Linux machines will soon have this version installed, an older version (/opt/matlab-R2019b/bin/matlab) is still available temporarily. The C&CZ-managed Windows machines will not receive a new version during the semester to prevent problems with version dependencies in current lectures.

New data storage: Ceph
Recently C&CZ presented an extra choice for data storage, next to the traditional RAID storage on individual fileservers: Ceph. The main advantages of Ceph are, that is scales almost without limits and does not have a single point of failure, but instead is "self-healing" and "self-managing". Within Ceph storage, choices can be made, the more expensive ones have no problem when a complete datacenter goes down. The Ceph storage can also be used as S3-storage. Because of the cluster setup, performance of Ceph storage can be surprising: writing is in general faster than reading, especially with many small files, Ceph can be much slower than traditional storage. If you want to try whether Ceph suits you, please contact C&CZ.

EduVPN also gives access to Science services
For quite some time, SURF EduVPN has been the standard VPN for central RU services. Now all VPN-protected Science services that are also accessible from the Science VPN services and/or from RU Eduroam, can be accessed from SURF RU EduVPN. This includes network drives, license servers, websites, protected labs, access to workplaces and special services such as telgids/ldap/kerberos.

Adobe Creative Cloud license prolongation
Starting Adobe Creative Cloud software (Acrobat, Illustrator, Photoshop etc.) gives the error message that the license will expire November 29, 2019. For the C&CZ managed pc's this will be solved before that time. If you manage a Windows pc or Mac, that is owned by FNWI and has Adobe Creative Cloud software installed, please contact the C&CZ helpdesk to have the license prolonged. Checking the expiry date can be done with AdobeExpiryCheck from the Install share.

Mac: wait with upgrade to macOS Catalina
The brand new macOS Catalina is now available. It is **not** a good idea to upgrade with the first group of users, this will give problems. Up till now, we received reports about Adobe software not working, F-Secure Client Security not working, MestreNova not working, EndNote needing an upgrade to 9.3.1 or higher, Science VPNsec only working after reinstalling VPN. For more information what could go wrong, see Hold Off Catalina and Wait on Catalina. If the upgrade has already been done, the problems can be solved by installing an older version of macOS and restoring files with Time Machine.

Intel compilers update
Update 5 of the Intel Parallel Studio XE Cluster Edition for Linux 2019 has been installed in /vol/opt/intelcompilers and is available on a.o. clusternodes en loginservers. The older (2019u4, 2019 and 2014) versions can also be found there. To set the environment variables correctly, BASH-users must first run:
source /vol/opt/intelcompilers/intel-2019u5/composerxe/bin/compilervars.sh intel64
After that, icc -V gives the new version number as output. For more info see the page on Intel compilers

Lilo and Stitch swapped
As was announced earlier, the linux login (ssh) servers (lilo5.science.ru.nl and lilo6.science.ru.nl) have swapped their nicknames, which makes Ubuntu 18.04 the standard instead of Ubuntu 16.04. The name lilo.science.ru.nl now refers to lilo6.science.ru.nl and stitch.science.ru.nl now refers to lilo5.science.ru.nl. If you get complaints about changed finger-prints, you know why. See also the page about servers.
