print_mail_to_link('_Science-mail_forwarded_to_', 'student.ru.nl')">New students: Science-mail forwarded to @student.ru.nl
In the first weeks of the new college year, mail sent to new students @student.science.ru.nl, has been forwarded to their Studielink address, because no @student.ru.nl address was available. Today, this forward has been changed to the @student.ru.nl address, because Biology otherwise could not send mail to all new students. If a new student wants to change the forwarding address, that can be done on the Do-It-Yourself website.

Save settings on B-FAC PC's
If you want to save your user settings when logging in on the PC's in study landscape, computer labs, etc., you have to login to the Do-It-Yourself website and check in Profile: "Roaming profile for B-FAC domain". This makes logging in a bit slower, because all user settings have to be copied from a server. The advantage is that all user settings are saved when logging out. An example of such a user setting is the trust of all "ru.nl" sites in the NoScript extension for Firefox, that is necessary to use e.g. Blackboard. New logins from now on will get a roaming profile in all domains.

Copy cards go away
The copy cards with a magnet strip, that can be used with the multifunctional copiers, will go away, starting in a few months. To print and copy in the future Peage-systeem, one needs a chip card and a network budget. In the near future the first multifunctional in this new system will be placed in the central hall of the Huygens building. The first few months this system can only be used by students, so the other Science-multifunctionals will be switched to this new system later. Departments are advised to keep less copy cards in stock.

Miro printer alternatives
The old printer miro has been out of order for a few weeks, but has been repaired now. There is no longer a service contract for miro, we try to keep it up and running, if only to finish the remaining toner cartridges. If you really preferred the output of this Xerox Phaser 7300DX over the other (Ricoh, HP) color printers and also over the printers of the RU copyshop, please report to C&CZ. C&CZ then can decide about the purchase of a new printer.

Symposium Education-IT on occasion of Kees Keijzers leaving
On occasion of Kees Keijzers leaving the Science Faculty, the Education Center (OWC) and the Computer- en Communication Department (C&CZ) organize a symposium in the Linnaeus building Friday, October 1 from 13:15 hours: "Simulation and copying in the lecture-room: education innovation with IT". The symposium shows products for education, that are a results of close cooperation between lecturers and IT workers at short distance, with feeling for the field of study.
For the programme and detailed information, see the invitation (in Dutch).

When asked for password through mail: do not react!
Every so often our users receive phishing-mail, in which a prompt response with username and password is requested. C&CZ likes to stress *again* that it is not very wise to believe something just because is written in a letter or e-mail and that *no official institution* will ever ask you for your password, just like a bank never will ask you for your pincode for your bank account. If a naive user falls for this scheme, his account is normally soon thereafter misused to send spam, with the effect that our mailservers are included in blacklists, causing problems for all users.

Microsoft Office 2007 installed in educational PC rooms
Microsoft Office 2007 has been installed on all PC's in the educational PC rooms, replacing the previous version, Office 2003. Help is available for the switch to Office2007:
- A Learning Guide for all parts of Office2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access) and also for Windows7, that can only be used on campus and is only available in Dutch.
- The (Dutch) information site of the Office 2007 project of the [GebruikersDienst ICT.

Education PC's usable by all RU-students
All RU students can now use the PC's in the educational PC rooms of the Faculty of Science. Choose the RU-domain and then login with your RU-account (S-number and RU-password).
RU employees will be able to login with their RU-account when the "provisioning" of the RU-accounts (U-number and RU-password) to the RU Active Directory domain has been realized.
Employees and students of the Faculty of Science can of course login to the B-FAC domain with their Science account. Other employees or guests can request a temporary Science account through their departmental contact.

Personnel changes: Jos Alsters, Pauline Berens
Jos Alsters has left C&CZ as of July 15, 2010. He has started his own ICT company Itsal.nl, " IT Services from Open Standards". C&CZ intends to hire Jos for some assignments.
On the same day Pauline Berens started at OWC (Education Centre) and C&CZ as IT-administrator/developer for Science education.

End of life of Solaris servers: Solo and Solost
The Solaris login servers solo and solost will be phased out on July 1, 2010. Please switch over to the repacement Linux servers lilo and stitch. In case of problems Postmaster can help. The phasing out of all Solaris servers marks the end of the system administration for this operating system. Because there are plans to switch to a different Linux distribution for servers and/or workstations, the number of supported operating systems will be constant in the near future.

Microsoft Office 2007
C&CZ will deploy Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise to all Managed PC's. Up till now Office2007 was only installed on request of departments, because of the completely different look and feel and compatibility issues. Office2007 will be installed on the Study Landscape PC's shortly, the PC rooms used for courses will follow during the summer holidays.
Departments can contact C&CZ to start an automatic deployment of the software to their managed PC's. For self-administered PC's, one can use the install network disk to install Office 2007. Necessary license codes are mailed by Postmaster on request from a faculty or RU mail-address.
Help is available for the move to Office2007:
- A Learning Guide for all parts of Office2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access) and also for Windows7. This can only be used on campus and is only available in Dutch.
- The (Dutch) information site of the Office 2007 project of the GebruikersDienst ICT
- Walk-in sessions with a teacher explaining Office2007 and the Learning Guide: Thursday May 27 in E.1 2.50 (Erasmus building, low-rise, room 2.50). Hours: 10:00-11:00, 11:00-12:00, 14:00-15:00, 15:00-16:00. Tuesday June 8 in Gymnasion GN3. Hours: 10:00-11:00, 11:00-12:00.

Students test new copy/print system
The test by students mentioned below has been ended, the Peage project continues. For the Peage project, that aims to deliver a new print/copy-system for Radboud University, C&CZ was looking for 25 students. These students received € 50,- print/copy budget in the new system. The requirements to participate were:
- student of the Science Faculty
- having an OV-chipcard
- present at the instructional meeting, Thursday May 27, 12:30-13:30 hours in CC3
- willing to print/copy during the test period (until July 2, 2010) on black/white printers/copiers in the Faculty of Arts, Medical Faculty, Nijmegen School of Management and the Science Faculty
- willing to share experiences in the evaluation
The first 25 reacting by mail to Peter van Campen have been selected, closing date was May 25.

Reduce mail from *-studenten-* mailing lists
Student representatives reported to C&CZ that some students would like to reduce the amount of mails they receive from the Mailman mailing lists. The mailing lists for students are the umbrella list fnwi-studenten, and the lists per discipline and year that make up the umbrella list. Therefore C&CZ changed the configuration of the -studenten- mailing lists, so digests (summaries) for the -students- mailing lists are only mailed once a week. Of course this only has an effect for students who have selected to prefer to be mailed a digest instead of receiving every mail separately. For all other Mailman mailinglists a digest is mailed once a day. The digest option can be selected per user per mailing list, e.g. on the -studenten-discipline/year mailing list website, through "change your subscription options".

Study landscape attendant for problems in PC-rooms
C&CZ and the Library of Science start a test on May 3, with using the study landscape attendants for problems in PC-rooms on the ground floor of the Huygens building. During this test, problems with PC's in these rooms should preferably be reported to the study landscape attendant. The attendant will also regularly check for violations of the rules of behaviour (no eating, drinking or causing inconvenience).

New Windows Terminal Server for BASS-Finlog and Tracelab
Because the current Windows terminal Server ts1.nwi.ru.nl shows some hardware problems, we decided to replace the machine. The new machine is a virtual Windows 2008 Terminal Server. This implies the Windows user interface has changed, it looks more like Windows Vista or Windows 7. Connecting to this machine should work the same as with the previous server, just change the name ts1.nwi.ru.nl to ts2.nwi.ru.nl. This machine is primarily intended for using BASS-Finlog and Tracelab.

Roaming user profiles for Windows can be enabled and disabled
On the Do-It-Yourself-website it is possible to enable and disable roaming user profiles for the domains NWI and B-FAC. The default is to use roaming profiles for the NWI domain and not for the B-FAC domain. In general logging on and off will be a little bit faster without using a roaming user profile, but a disadvantage is that user settings will not be saved. Examples of user settings that wil not be saved are the Desktop backgound image, documents stored on the Desktop, Email settings, 'Favorites', 'Recent Documents', etc. Without a roaming profile documents that are placed on the desktop will not be saved!

Linux cups server and printing using Kerberos tickets
To print from Linux to a budgetted printer you had to type your account password for every print job. Sometimes this was problematic if the application was not started from a terminal window. Now there is a CUPS-server drukwerk.science.ru.nl which demands a valid Kerberos ticket, so you do not need to type your password for every print job. Managed Linux PCs running Fedora 8 and above already use this CUPS-server. A Kerberos ticket granting ticket can be obtained by typing kinit.
We will try to extend this CUPS-server in such a way it can be used for Windows IPP-printing.

New pc's in pc rooms dual-boot Windows/Linux
All new pc's in the pc rooms and study landscape are dual-boot: an individual student or employee can choose to start Windows-XP or Linux Fedora 11. The rooms can now also be used for courses that require Linux. Only the older pc's in TK075 (HG00.075) are still single-boot Windows-XP. In the course of 2010 the migration to Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 Linux will start.

Old pc's for sale to Science employees and students
In January, all 5 year old pc's in pc rooms and study landscape have been replaced by new ones. Departments of the Science Faculty have already had the opportunity to express their interest in these old pc's. C&CZ still has a few dozen left, which are now offered to individual employees and students of the Science Faculty, almost without any guarantee. When interested, contact C&CZ (Helpdesk, Theo Neuij/Mathieu Bouwens, 56666). Specifications: Dell Optiplex SX280; Pentium 4 dual core processor 2.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB hard disc, including (attached) 17" TFT-flatscreen, keyboard and mouse.

Web application for employee attendance
Within various service departments of the Faculty of Science, a web application for employee attendance (time registration) is used. This application is based on the open source system TimeTrex. Other departments that are interested in using the system for one or more employees, should contact C&CZ. Registration is done with passes or on the web. It can be helpful for the administration of variable working hours. It is a somewhat flexible system, that e.g. can also be switched to automatically register attendance, which makes it into a (sick) leave registration system. There is no interface (yet) with the RU BASS-HRM registration of (sick) leave, which has to be updated at least quarterly.

Saving time when making appointments (manage calendars)
If you spend a lot of time planning appointments, especially with stable and/or big lists of employees, please read on.
The last few weeks, the Faculty Office succesfully tested the Mozilla SunBird calendar software. At this moment, with this software one can view the free/busy information of a few dozen employees that are using Outlook, Google Calendar or a Science Faculty E-Groupware calendar.
If you are interested in using this calendar software, we would like to hear from you, with a list of persons with whom you most often make (group) appointments. These persons can change their calender settings themselves.
Radboud University intends to migrate in 2010 to a modern mail/agenda system for all employees and students. This system can be used with a nice webclient, but also with Outlook, Thunderbird etc. This should make planning appointments with RU employees really simple and efficient. If you can wait for this new system, you do not have to react of course.

Endnote X3 available
Endnote version X3 is available for MS-Windows and Macintosh. It can be installed on Windows from the install network disk. The CDs can also be borrowed by employees and students, for home use too. It has also been installed on the Windows-XP Managed PCs.

Office2007 and Learning Guide
Departments that would like to migrate from Microsoft Office XP to 2007 with their Windows managed pc's can send a request to C&CZ. To help users with this migration, Radboud University has bought a Learning Guide (in Dutch), that can be used from the campus network. The guide also contains information on Windows7.

BASS on Mac and Linux
The use of the BASS (Oracle) concern applications for HRM and financial transactions is supported only on some Windows platforms. However because BASS is essentially a Java application running from a browser it should function just as well from other platforms such as Macs and Linux systems. Indeed we were able to place an order through BASS from a Linux (Fedora 11) system and we've heard that for some people BASS also works from a Mac. For those who are not afraid to experiment a little we have collected a few hints on our BASS page which may help you to get things going.

Replacement of pc's in pc rooms
In the third week of January, in total 122 pc's in pc rooms TK149/TK153, Biology Lab TK329 and the study landscape will be replaced by new ones. The inconvenience for students will be minimal in this week. Departments can contact C&CZ (Theo Neuij, 56666) if they are interested in acquiring a number of these more than 5 year old pc's.

PCs in the Library of Science accessible by all RU students
As of December 23, 2009 all students of Radboud University can logon to the PCs in the Library of Science in the Huygens building with their RU account (s-number). Make sure to choose the RU logon domain at the logon screen.
- Personal configuration settings are not preserved between sessions on these PCs.
- Only the black-and-white printers in the vicinity of the library are automatically available. Other printers need to be configured manually for each session. For instructions please come to the library front desk.
FNWI students and staff can also logon with their science account (domain B-fac), yet without their personal profile. However, the U-network drive with their personal data is available. On PC's in the terminal rooms the personal profiles are still available.
In January the PCs in the Studielandschap will be replaced by brand new hardware. The new PCs will be accessible by all RU students.
