Peage MFP Huygens building in maintenance April 2
Tuesday, April 2, the Peage MFP and the Peage POS near the restaurant in the Huygens building cannot be used. The ISC will use that day to investigate whether Peage can also be made available for employees instead of only for students.

XP support ends April 8!
As announced before, from April 8 Microsoft will no longer support Windows XP. Therefore C&CZ advises to change to a different operating system before that date, if possible. XP computers that cannot get an upgrade, e.g. because they are attached to a measuring device, can be moved to a shielded part of the network. PC's can be upgraded to a C&CZ managed Windows 7 and/or Ubuntu 12.04 PC. On a Windows7 managed PC, a department can have local administrator (localadmin) rights. One can also ask C&CZ to only install a PC with Windows 7 and/or Ubuntu 12.04. Please contact the C&CZ helpdesk if you want to make use of this. Please note that if a PC doesn't have the required hardware, one will have to buy new hardware, e.g. upgrade memory or buy a new PC.

Password lock-out only after 10 false attempts
Until today, a Science account was locked out after 3 consecutive false login attempts. This has been changed: only after 10 false attempts the account is locked out for 30 minutes. This makes this settings for the Science password and the RU password identical. You are not forced to change the Science or RU password on a regular basis. Changing passwords once in a while adds to the security, but please think of all devices where this password is stored (laptop, smartphone, home PC, ...).

The latest version of Matlab, R2014a, is available for departments that have licenses. The software and license codes can be obtained through a mail to postmaster for those entitled to it. The software can also be found on the install-disc. The C&CZ-managed 64-bit Linux machines will soon have this version installed, an older version (/opt/matlab-R2013b/bin/matlab) is still available temporarily. The C&CZ-managed Windows machines will not receive a new version during the semester to prevent problems with version dependencies in current lectures.

Make booklets with the Konica Minolta MFP pr-hg-00-002
In the Konica Minolta MFP pr-hg-00-002 a punch unit and a saddle-unit that can fold have been placed. This makes it possible to produce complete booklets. One can punch 2 or 4 holes. At maximum 20 sheets can be saddle-stitched and folded, so one can produce an A4 booklet from A3 sheets or an A5 booklet from A4 sheets.

Eduroam and wired network adjustments
After complaints about the Eduroam coverage in the Huygens building, a plan has been made to move three wireless access points and nine will be added. We expect this to be realized before the end of March.
The planned changes in the wired network outside working hours in preparation of IP telephony, have been postponed, because it appeared that the network had become less stable.

SURFnet FileSender: send large files securely
Since February 24, securely transfering large files has become possible for employees with a @science.ru.nl mail address with the experimental version of SURFnet FileSender. Files up to 100GB can be sent to a maximum of 25 recipients. You can also send others a "guest voucher" with which they can make use of this service. The transfer of files is encrypted (https) to a server of SURFnet in the Netherlands. FileSender is often more useful than alternatives because of the maximum size or the information security. The SURFnet FileSender service is based on the FileSender project, in which SURFnet participates.

F-Secure security software: for Mac and Android too
On self-managed computers that have been purchased with RU funds or through external funding for the benefit of Radboud University, you are allowed to install the RU paid version of F-Secure. There is a version for MS Windows 7 and 8 and there is a Mac version.
The price of F-Secure for privately owned computers (Windows PCs, Macs en Android) has been lowered for employees as well as for students to € 2 per year. At Surfspot search for Secure. Of course, you can install different security software instead, like the free Panda for Windows 8, the free Avast voor Windows 7 or possibly the free Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows, that is only seldom recommended.

Scanning on the Konica Minolta MFPs
Update: as of February 27, the settings of all Konica Minolta MFP network switch ports have been changed. Please report remaining problems to C&CZ.
Scanning to e-mail sometimes doesn't (didn't?) work on the KM MFPs. It can temporarily be resolved by switching the machine off and on again. An alternative is scanning to a USB stick. Log in at the MFP with the scan pin, put a document in the feeder or on the document glass, select Scan and then plug the USB stick into the USB port on the right side of the MFP, on the top side. After a few seconds the MFP recognizes the USB stick and presents the choice "Save a document to external memory". Choose OK and press Start. See also the RU manual on the RU-page about the MFP's.

Julia programming language
The Julia programming language is available as of today on the Linux login servers. Julia is a high-level dynamic programming language designed to address the requirements of high-performance numerical and scientific computing. The most notable aspect of Julia is its performance, which often comes within a factor of two of fully optimized C code. If you want Julia to be available on other computers too, please contact C&CZ.

BASS problem with Java 7 resolved
The ISC let us know that after the installation of patches installed in BASS during the weekend of December 1, the possibility to use a recent version of Java (version 7) had erroneously disappeared. As of February 11, 2014 this issue has been resolved. The function in BASS to work with all versions of Java SE (JRE) on the client (PC) has been reactivated. Furthermore all JAR-files in BASS have received a security certificate (they have been signed), with which it possible for BASS to work with the latest Java SE versions (Java SE 7.51 en hoger). BASS users who work with Forms, will see pop-up windows asking "Do you want to run this application?". Of this a description has been made on the RU Intranet.

Tele lecturing and video conferencing
There is a tele lecture room at the Faculty of Science: HG00.108. This facility makes it possible for students who are elsewhere in the world, to participate virtually and interactively in a lecture given in this room. The other way around is also possible. Moreover in the large conference room HG01.060 a video conferencing facility has been created. This setup also serves as backup for the tele lecture facility. For help and advice please contact the Audiovisual Department of our faculty.

RU uniform print costs
As of February 1, C&CZ will change the [https://wiki.science.ru.nl/cncz/Printers_en_printen?setlang=en#.5BKosten.5D.5BCosts.5D print costs], in agreement with the RU Executive Board decision to make print costs uniform within Radboud University. The price for black&white A4 will increase 5.7%. Costs for A4 color, A3 black&white and A3 color will be lowered by 18%, 54% and 31% respectively. Because we hope that the C&CZ print system will be replaced by the RU wide Peage system in the near future, we will not immediately prioritize to adapt the C&CZ print system to make single-sided more expensive than double-sided, as is now the case elsewhere on campus.

New network disks bigger and less expensive
Because C&CZ has a new file server, we can lower the pricing of network disks by 50%. Due to the recently announced new backup service larger disks (400GB) are also possible. A new option is an un-backupped disk, which is four times less expensive. Such a disk could be used for copies of a local disk. Contracts for hiring a network disk are still entered into for a period of three years. Existing contracts are not changed.

MobaXterm: powerful X11/SSH/etc. client for Windows
MobaXterm is now available on the S-disk. It is a powerful and easily usable alternative for X11/SSH software like Xming, Xwin32, WinSCP and Putty. From the MobaXterm website: "MobaXterm is an enhanced terminal for Windows with an X11 server, a tabbed SSH client and several other network tools for remote computing (VNC, RDP, telnet, rlogin). MobaXterm brings all the essential Unix commands to Windows desktop, in a single portable exe file which works out of the box." The support of OpenGL could also be a reason to start using MobaXterm. If you use it professionally, you should consider subscribing to MobaXterm Professional Edition. We already reported that the support of X-win32 ends January 31, 2014. If you still need to switch, MobaXterm is a good choice.

Automatic configuration of mail clients
When installing a mail client it is now possible to configure all settings (login name, IMAP and SMTP server and parameters) automatically for most of the C&CZ mail domains. In general you just need to fill in your main mail address. For details, see the mail service page. Using a webmail service like Roundcube is even simpler, there are no settings to fill in.

Laptops without wifi to use for examinations without Internet access
It is now possible to borrow laptops from the Science laptop pool with wireless network switched off. These laptops can be used for examinations to allow students to use a computer without giving easy access to the internet. Wifi has been switched off by default on two laptops in the pool by request of the Education Center in order to assist disabled students with examinations. For larger examinations, please reserve the laptops in time, specifying the need for wireless networking switched off if necessary.

Postponed replacement of home-server "bundle"
Begin : 20131223 07:30 End : 20131223 09:00 (expected) Affected : Users with homedirectory server "bundle" (as can be seen on http://DIY.science.ru.nl)
The replacement of the old home server "bundle" has been postponed and will now guaranteed take place on Monday morning December 23. Because the data have been synchronized with the new server, there will not be much downtime. The new server should be very dependable: hardware RAID-6, double processors and power supplies and a 5-year support contract from the supplier. The performance has improved, e.g. by using hardware RAID with a 1 GB write cache with battery backup.

Upgrade F-Secure security software
The most recent version of F-Secure can be bought by RU employees now for ca. € 5,25 at Surfspot, search for "secure". It is F-Secure Internet Security 2014 for 1 year, for 1 user. This version also supports Windows 8. F-Secure for Android and Mac are available with the same license. The support for version 9, that could be used freely at home, ends on February 6, 2014. The business suite version that is used on campus, that can be found on the Install network share, can't be used at home, since it needs to communicate with a policy manager. N.B.: The private license doesn't cover use by family members or roommates. See Radboudnet news for more info and updates.

In all buildings of Radboud University the Eduroam wireless network is now available. The wireless network ru-wlan will be discontinued on January 15, 2014. Please switch to Eduroam as soon as possible. One can login with U- or Semail@example.com and RU-password or with firstname.lastname@example.org and Science password. Note: Laptops with Windows 8 sometimes do not connect automatically to Eduroam. If this is the case, choose "Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)" at the prompt "Choose network authentication" during configuration. The iPhone, iPad and iPod cannot cope with multiple corporate networks, so one has to 'Forget' ru-wlan before configuring Eduroam. Wireless network configuration manuals for various devices and operating systems are available on the IT Servicecenter website.

When you get a mail pretending to come from "C&CZ" or "RU Administrator" asking you to mail or provide your username and password to some website in order to prevent problems: do not fall for this. Because if you do react, you will cause problems! Internet criminals will use the credentials to spread spam through our mailservers. They will also have access to all of your mail on the IMAP server and all of your files. The past few weeks no less than five FNWI employees and students fell for such a phishing mail, with serious consequences for all users.

Old pc clearance
Update, September 6: There are already more requests than available PC's. Next year there will probably be a PC clearance again.
This year too, C&CZ will give away old PC's from the PC labs. The PC's are Dell Optiplex USFF 760 "little backpacks" including monitor, keyboard and mouse. The hard disc has been wiped, the PC's given are without operating system or any form of warranty, help or support. PC's are 'only given to students of the Faculty of Science'. There is a maximum of 1 PC per person. Send a mail to , the C&CZ helpdesk specifying your Science mail address, i.e. ending in @student.science.ru.nl. This offer is valid until October 1, 2013 or until the supply runs out. You will get a mail with a date/time to collect your PC.

Network outlets with authentication in Library and on mezzanine
As of today, the reading room of the Library of Science and the mezzanine have 32 and 64 authenticated network outlets respectively, with network speeds of 100 Mbps. Connect your laptop with a UTP cable and start a browser. You will be redirected to a website where you can register with your personnel number (U123456) or student number (s123456). After that, you will have Internet access. In the near future, you will also be able to register with your . We intend to implement authentication for all publicly accessible active network outlets in the future. The technique behind this is Qmanage by Quarantainenet.

KM printers/copiers/scanners active, Ricohs removed
All Konica Minolta MFP's are in production now, all Ricohs have been switched off. KM has changed the settings of a few printers to print only b/w, preventing accidental color pages. We advise everyone to try to set the printer configuration on your desktop to print default in b/w. Printing and scanning works roughly the same as with the Ricohs. Employees of the Faculty of Science can contact C&CZ to get a PIN code for copying. Students can make copies by using the Peage MFP near the restaurant, or make copies by scanning and printing afterwards.

PC's computer labs: more and new
The page about the computer labs lists all details about the PC's in the computer labs. The most important changes are:
- The old PC's in TK029, TK206, Study area, Library of Science, Project rooms and Flex workplaces have been replaced by new HP Compaq Elite 8300 PC's, which are All-in-one PC's.
- In the study area extra PC's have been installed.
- A new lab TK702 has been created with 17 PC's.

End of Science wireless, enter Eduroam
In the near future the preparations will start for the Eduroam wireless network in the Faculty of Science buildings and the increase of capacity of the wireless network. This also marks the end of the Science wireless network, as was announced earlier.
The work will probably start on August 5. Over the course of a few weeks the Science network will gradually disappear while the Eduroam network appears. Because of this transition period we strongly advise to switch all wireless devices to ru-wlan before that time.

Mail problems after supplying password to phishers
Begin : 20130701 23:50 End : 20121117 ca 10:35 Affected : Users of horde webmail and users wanting to send mail to e.g. hotmail.com
Horde webmail again appeared to be misused for sending spam. This could happen because a naive user gave the Science password to phishers/spammers. After first stopping horde, this night we disabled the account of the naive user and restarted horde. This morning it appeared that this short spam-outbreak had caused administrators of hotmail.com to add our mail server to their blacklist. Therefore we switched the IP-number of this mail server and asked Microsoft to remove the old IP address from their blacklist.

At the same time the web address (URL) of BASS changes to: https://bass.ru.nl/ Those who logon to BASS directly may want to change their existing bookmark or desktop shortcut. Those who use the port forwarder to login to BASS will have to change one or more settings as well. More information about this can be found on the BASS page.

Linux login server lilo3 replaces lilo1
A new Ubuntu 12.04 Linux login server lilo3.science.ru.nl is available. Therefore the six year old login server lilo1 will be phased out soon. The name lilo, that always points to the newest/fastest login server, will also be moved from the four year old lilo2 to the new lilo3. The new lilo3 is a Dell PowerEdge R410 with 2 Xeon L5640 processors and 32 GB memory. Please remove the old entry of lilo(.science.ru.nl) from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts file. For cautious people wanting to check the fingerprint of the public RSA key before supplying their Science-password to the new server: 3e:b9:89:4d:53:9b:8f:4a:97:b2:a1:c3:0d:74:34:2c.

Ricoh and Xafax replaced by Konica Minolta
In a few weeks we will place new Konica Minolta (KM) multifunctionals (MFP's) next to the Ricoh's and some other places. After a short period, in which one can switch from Ricoh to KM, we will remove most of the Ricoh's. Until July we will have a Ricoh with Xafax-pole in a few places, so one can empty the Xafax-cards. Because the RU-wide Peage-project is still not in operation for employees, the new KM's can be used like the Ricoh's. The only difference is that the Xafax-poles will be removed because the contract with Xafax ends and cannot be continued. Copying on th KM's therefore will be only be possible after entering a code. We will contact departments about the code and about the budget/kostenplaats from which the copy costs can be reimbursed. If you do not have a code, copying can be accomplished by scanning and printing.

Electronic cost declaration through i-Expense, also from home/Internet
Since the introduction of i-Expense, the electronic cost declaration module in BASS-Finlog - the financial computer system of our university, the number of BASS users has increased enormously. New users need to be aware whether they can access BASS directly or only through the so called Port Forwarder. Recently, access from home/Internet has been made possible if one uses VPN. More information on this can be found on the BASS page and in a previous [news article] about using BASS in combination with the RU firewall.
Logging on to BASS may be cumbersome or impossible from certain workstations because the BASS infrastructure does not support all kinds of PC-systems seamlessly. Cost declarations on paper are allowed if logging on to BASS fails for some reason, until the logon difficulties are solved. The central organisation and C&CZ work together to this end.

New Functional Manager CMS
For many years everyone at FNWI who was involved in websites based on the RU Content Management System (CMS) relied on Peter Klok for help and advice. In IT terms Peter was our functional manager. Because of Peter's retirement this role was taken over by C&CZ. This means that all support questions regarding the websites of the Faculty of Science, regardless of the underlying technique, can be directed to C&CZ. In practice the support task for the CMS is in the hands of Wim G.H.M. Janssen, IT specialist at the IMAPP institute. C&CZ (especially Fred Melssen) will function as Wim's backup.

Replacement of Ricoh multifunctionals by Konica Minolta
The European tender for multifunctionals (printer/copier/scanner) for the university was won by Konica Minolta. This means that the current Ricoh machines will be replaced. There is a project to make the print/copy/scan system Péage suitable for employees. The printing and copying costs for employees will be charged to their "aanstellingskostenplaats", i.e. the current budget groups will disappear. Until this project is completed successfully, the C&CZ printbudget system will be used.
- Since the new Peage system will not support Xafax copycards, it is advised to minimize your local stock of Xafax copycards.
- The first Konica Minolta MFP's will be placed for the expansion to Huygens 2.0 (Mercator 1).
- The first replacement of Ricoh-machines in FNWI will be in April: the Peage printer Watt near the restaurant.

More IP-numbers for ru-wlan and Science (wireless)
Monday, March 4th 2013 at 18:00 hours, the number of IP numbers that is available in the FNWI buildings for ru-wlan and Science was doubled, as was announced shortly before. Because ru-wlan moved to a new range, users of ru-wlan lost connectivity for at most 15 minutes. There was already a plan to replace ru-wlan and Science within the FNWI buildings by the RU-wide Eduroam and ru-wlan, but the wireless network usage had grown so fast that we could not wait for this plan to be realized. The week before, some wireless users at times could not even get an IP address, although the lease time had been brought down to 30 minutes. Therefore this temporary measure became necessary on such short notice. Because there are more IP numbers available now, more users can nowswitch from Science to ru-wlan wireless, in preparation for the realization of the plan mentioned above.

Phishing mail: "Belangrijke boodschap met betrekking tot uw Radboud Universiteit Webmail" en "Fwd: Your e-mail will expire soon"
Recently a number of employees of the Faculty of Science received a phishing email with the subject "Belangrijke boodschap met betrekking tot uw Radboud Universiteit Webmail" and content "Nieuw Belangrijk Veiligheid Bericht Alert! Inloggen om het probleem op te lossen." Others received mail with subject "Fwd: Your e-mail will expire soon". The link provided in the mail points to a copy of our Horde webmail service. Big differences are:
- the URL is not within science.ru.nl
- it is not a secure https connection, the lock is not present
- the account name and password that you type in, do not arrive at C&CZ servers, but at Internet criminals. They can then access all files and mail of that Science account. Usually the criminals try to use the user credentials to send spam via our mail servers. This is something we notice; in such a case C&CZ will disable the user account a.s.a.p. to prevent further abuse of the account and to prevent our mail servers from ending up on black lists.
It is not the first time we see a phishing attack specifically aimed at Science-users and it will most probably not be the last time either. Please stay alert! If you want to read more about phishing, please see this monthly security newsletter.

Phishing mail: Update Your Web Mailbox
Recently a number of employees of the Faculty of Science received a phishing email with the subject "Update Your Web Mailbox !!!" This email is supposedly sent by "Science.Ru.Nl Administrator" and tries to lure the recipients into giving away their login credentials. It is not the first time we see a phishing attack specifically aimed at Science-users and it will most probably not be the last time either. The mail contains a link to a shortened URL under http://goo.gl/ . If you fall for this and click on the link it leads you to a (now deleted) Google Docs site. If you are gullible enough to log in with your Science (or RU) credentials, then these become known to Internet criminals. This means that your account and all of your files and email are accessible by those criminals. If a program complains about an incorrect certificate of e.g. a website, then never ignore this, but report this to C&CZ a.s.a.p.. The reason to give this warning is a recent complaint of a browser, that pointed to a contaminated laptop, that launched an ARP spoofing attack. The idea behind such an attack is to listen to network traffic in order to e.g. obtain passwords.

Recommendations after nu.nl hack
The popular Dutch news website NU.nl has been compromised and altered to serve a malicious worm to those who visited it on March 14, 2012 between 11:30 and 12:30. PC's with older versions of Adobe Reader and Java may have been infected with the Sinowal worm, that is designed to steal passwords, online banking information and other sensitive data. We heard reports that up-to-date installations of F-Secure Client Security blocked this malware. According to ComputerIdee only a few security software suites recognized this malware. The version of Hitmanpro mentioned there has been copied to the Install network share, for employees and students who want to scan their PC.
General recommendations to limit risks:
- Always update all software, especially browsers, mail clients and software used to show content from the Internet: Java, PDF-readers (Adobe, ...), Office suites, Flash, ...
- Never trust a compromised system again: Clean the Master Boot Record, e.g. with TDSSkiller by Kaspersky and do a fresh install of the OS, with all updates available.

New Matlab license server (old one goes away!) and Matlab R2012a
There is a new license server for the use of Matlab. Users entitled to a license can request the new license codes by sending a mail to postmaster. The old license server will be brought down in the not too distant future, so to avoid problems, all installations of Matlab have to be updated, also older versions! The latest version of Matlab, R2012a, is available for departments that have bought licenses. The software and license codes can be acquired through a mail to postmaster for those entitled to it. The software can also be found on the install-disc. The C&CZ-managed 64-bit Linux machines have this version installed, an older version (/opt/matlab-R2011b/bin/matlab) is still available temporarily. The C&CZ-managed Windows machines will receive this version too.

Please use ru-wlan instead of Science wireless!
In the near future the wireless access points in the Huygens building and the buildings around it, will be replaced by new ones, based on a new technique. The Science wireless network will then no longer be available. Therefore please switch over to using the ru-wlan wireless network, that is available before and after. One can use ru-wlan with U-number and RU-password, but also with and Science-password. After the switch, faster (wireless-N) access points wille be used in busy areas. After the switch the eduroam wireless network will be available too, one can use that with and RU-password, but also with and Science-password. Before the switch, eduroam is only available near the Huygens building on the terrace behind the restaurant. In the future ru-wlan will be switched off, only eduroam will survive. Furthermore, there is a plan to have more wireless access outside of the Huygens building, i.e. at the central entrance and the grass behind the Huygens building.

Which computer lab has free PCs?
Since recently, the website welke.tk shows which computer lab has free pc's. Advantages of this site over the existing current usage page are that it is realtime and that one can immediately see whether a lab is or will be reserved for lectures. The website welke.tk can be viewed on smartphones too. The website has been created by Bas Westerbaan in cooperation with C&CZ, the design was made by Judith van Stegeren, Ruben Nijveld helped with mobile support. The source of the reserved hours is Ruuster.nl.

Teachers: test your course software in the summer!
C&CZ plans to reinstall all pc's in the computer labs with 64-bit Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 during the summer holidays. Because it is not guaranteed that all software just runs with these versions of the operating systems, you are advised to reserve time for testing purposes. Test systems will be available at C&CZ in time.

Network mini switch only to be used after consultation
The new network switches by default allow only two different computers (MAC addresses) for each network outlet, plugging in a third one will shut down the outlet for 15 minutes. If it is necessary to have more computers on a network outlet, please consult C&CZ network management beforehand.

Network problems after change of January 28 solved
January 28, the UCI network management installed new software and a new configuration on the Science Faculty router, among other things to prepare for IP telephony. The following week some network problems were reported, which have been traced to a high cpu load of the router. After a few temporary measures were taken, on Monday January 28 18:00-18:45 a new configuration was installed, after which the cpu load hasn't been high again and the network problems appear to have been solved more permanently.

Faculty Education Award 2011
The Faculty of Science Education Award 2011 was awarded to C&CZ, for its "long and excellent service record with regards to the provision of support to students and teachers", according to the unanimous jury. The dean, who presented the award, mentioned several developments in the IT infrastructure and the teaching support systems and the close cooperation with staff and students, which makes that products are developed that are needed. Since 2001, the Faculty Education Award is awarded by representatives from the Faculty Student Council and both student and staff faculty degree programme committees. The jury is chaired by the Vice-Dean for Education. The award consists of a certificate and a work of art by Anneke van Bergen. C&CZ is very honoured by this splendid award.

Change ru-wlan, Dec 19 23:00-24:00 hours
The UCI let us know that the ru-wlan wireless network will have a service window on december 19 between 23:00 and 24:00 hours. In this service window the number of IP addresses is enlarged from 2000 to 4000 and the authentication gets quickened and for iPhones improved. After this service window it is no longer necessary to use profiles for iPads and iPhones. During this service window use of ru-wlan will not be possible.

Split-view DNS could influence Internet at home
Anyone using at home a science.ru.nl nameserver like ns1.science.ru.nl, should remove these DNS-servers from the list of DNS-servers, because we started using split-view DNS. With split-view DNS, we can give internal (RU on campus) pc's answers differing from those given to external pc's. The UCI introduced this a few months ago for e.g. the DNS zones ru.nl and heyendaal.net to increase IT security.

Never react to an e-mail that asks for your password!
A few days ago one of our users replied to an e-mail that apparently was sent by "support" and asked for username and password. This account was later misused to send hundred thousands spam-mails through our mail server. This resulted in the blacklisting of our outgoing mail server in e.g. the blacklists of Windows Live Hotmail. The fastest way to remedy this is to give our outgoing mail server a different IP-address, which we did this morning. Lesson: Never reply to an e-mail that asks for your username and password! It causes a lot of trouble for us and other users.

Milestone Linux Compute Cluster: 512 CPU-cores and 1024 GPU/CUDA-cores
Early 2006 a faculty Linux compute cluster was started by the purchase of 4-core rackmountable servers by several departments. The latest additions to the cluster, a machine with 48 CPU-cores and a machine with 12 CPU-cores and 1024 CUDA GPU-cores in 2 NVIDIA Tesla M2090 cards, brought the size of the cluster to these milestone figures. Source code has to be rewritten to make use of CUDA-cores. The latest version of Matlab has support for the use of CUDA-cores. For workstations and servers, including these compute servers, Fedora Linux is gradually being replaced by Ubuntu LTS Linux.

BASS and single logon
For security reasons direct access to the concern application BASS used to be blocked, even from within the RU internal network; one had to logon to the Port Forwarder first which meant two logons in a row. With the RU central firewall in place the first logon is not necessary anymore (although still possible) for PC's which are located behind the firewall from a network topology point of view. A significant amount of the PC's in FNWI have already been relocated behind the firewall. On the BASS page under System Configuration you can see the current status of your PC and how to configure your PC to be able to switch to single logon.

Mobile telephony: coverage and future
The coverage of the Vodafone mobile network in the Huygens building has been improved considerably, it should be good in the whole building now. We plan to connect the mobile networks of KPN and T-Mobile to the newly installed Distributed Antenna System as well. The improved coverage is a necessary step to use Vodafone Wireless Office, which allows phone calls to and from cell phones using the RU-internal five-digit numbers. The future of enterprise telephony for Radboud University consists of Voice over IP for desktop phones and Wireless Office for cell phones.

Versioning of text and source code: Subversion hosting
Are you developing software? Do you write code? You've probably created some zip files of working versions to fall back to. Sounds familiar? You can now use the Subversion service of C&CZ. Subversion supports you with versioning of source code files. Using Subversion, progress becomes visible and there's always an 'undo button'. Ultimately, it's a nice way to manage any kind of collaborative work where multiple individuals are editing the same files. The Subversion service is available for people with a Science account. Repository access is also possible for people from outside the faculty.
