Intel compilers update

Update 4 of the Intel Parallel Studio XE Cluster Edition for Linux 2019 has been installed in /vol/opt/intelcompilers and is available on a.o. clusternodes en loginservers. The older (2019 and 2014) versions can also be found there. To set the environment variables correctly, BASH-users must first run:

source /vol/opt/intelcompilers/intel-2019u4/composerxe/bin/compilervars.sh intel64

After that, icc -V gives the new version number as output. For more info see the page on Intel compilers

VPN with two-factor authentication for shielded lab-network

The Science VPN has a new technique, in which individual users can get access to restricted parts of the network with two-factor authentication (username/password and certificate). This has been developed on request of a department that wants to give maintenance partners access to only the equipment that they service. Departments that are interested in this access, can contact C&CZ.

Secure Email: end of Squirrel webmail July 1

Because Squirrel webmail can't handle the STARTTLS security level that we want to achieve, Squirrel will be phased out July 1. Users are advised to switch to a more modern Science webmail system.

Secure Email: SPF/STARTTLS, DANE/DMARC and DKIM

Recently, C&CZ worked on DNS based techniques that can be used to fight spam, phishing and eavesdropping of mail. Of the list of mandatory open standards of the [https://www.forumstandaardisatie.nl/open-standaarden/lijst/verplicht?f%5B0%5D=field_keywords%3A68 Pas-Toe-of-Leg-Uit] list w.r.t. email, C&CZ implemented SPF a while ago. Because strict implementation [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sender_Policy_Framework#FAIL_and_forwarding breaks simple/automatic forwarding], SPF has not been implemented in a strict manner. Also STARTTLS for mail encryption has been implemented a while ago. Recently, we introduced [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNS-based_Authentication_of_Named_Entities DANE] and DMARC, which makes it possible to start with DKIM.

Secure DNS (DNSSEC) introduced

As a requisite for the RU project "Introduction Safe Email Standards" project, that deals with the list of mandatory open standards of the Pas-Toe-of-Leg-Uit list, C&CZ introduced DNSSEC for all mail domains within ru.nl administered by C&CZ (science.ru.nl, cs.ru.nl, astro.ru.nl, math.ru.nl, ...).

Old MFPs will be removed April 25

The old Konica Minolta MFPs will be removed from April 25. Users have had several weeks time to move over to the new system, that is much faster and more user friendly. For students: try to use up your old credit and do not top up. Can't use up all your credit? Then you can ask to get a refund at the Library of Science until June 1, 2019. For all users: EveryOnePrint will be shutdown too, this functionality can be found in the SafeQ web upload.

Matlab R2019a available

The latest version of Matlab, R2019a, is available for departments that have licenses. The software and license codes can be obtained through a mail to postmaster for those entitled to it. The software can also be found on the install-disc. All C&CZ-managed Linux machines will soon have this version installed, an older version (/opt/matlab-R2018b/bin/matlab) is still available temporarily. The C&CZ-managed Windows machines will not receive a new version during the semester to prevent problems with version dependencies in current lectures.

New MFPs and printing with Science account

The new Konica Minolta MFPs that offer the RU-wide FollowMe printqueue, can also be used with the Science account. This only works if the U/S number is known at C&CZ, which can be controlled on the Do-It-Yourself website. On C&CZ managed Windows PCs one can then print to the queue "FollowMeScience", that translates the Science-account to the U/S number and forwards the job to the FollowMe queue. On C&CZ managed Linux hosts, this queue is called "FollowMe". The six year old MFPs are replaced RU-wide 1-for-1 by new ones, including options like the bookletmaker at HG00.002.

Peage and MFP's replaced in March

Konica Minolta won the European tender for multifunctionals (MFPs) again. All MFPs, associated software and the payment system will be replaced in March 2019. Every new MFP has a card reader. The campus card or another chip card, e.g. the OV chip card, can be linked to the RU account (U-, S- or E-number). Logging in on the MFP can then be done without a pin code with the linked card. For students or study associations it becomes possible to use group budgets. Students will use the Skuario app for topping up and transferring budgets. More info will be published in March.

Linux login server lilo4 decommissioned

The support for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS ends on April 25th, 2019. Therefore we will turn off lilo4 with this version of Ubuntu on May 1st, 2019. The default login server (lilo.science.ru.nl) will be redirected to lilo6 with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS after the summer break. The current default loginserver lilo5.science.ru.nl with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will remains available until support for this version ends in 2021. The signatures of the C&CZ loginservers can be checked.

Ubuntu 18.04 for computer labs and individual workstations

During the summer break all computer labs will be (re)installed with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Since months ago, one can test course software using the Ubuntu 18.04 loginserver lilo6. All PC's in HG00.075 and HG00.761 will be replaced by new ones, (All-in-One, dual boot with Windows10 and Ubuntu 18.04 Linux). After this replacement, al PC's in the computer labs have fast SSD disks.

If you are using Linux PC's in computer labs as well as a C&CZ managed Linux PC in your office, we advise you to consider upgrading your office PC to Ubuntu 18.04 as well. Running Ubuntu 16.04 in your office on a managed PC and using an Ubuntu 18.04 PC in the computer labs will result in problems.

Computer labs: login to locked pc

From now on, it is possible to login to a PC in the computer labs, the library and study landscape when another user has locked the PC. The hope is that this contributes somewhat to reducing the shortage of workplaces. When these PCs were running Windows7, after 15 minutes of inactivity the logged-in user could be logged out without restarting the PC, but this software no longer works with Windows10. To login as another user, click on "Switch User" in the the bottom left corner of the lock screen.

Temporarily free Stata licence on RU pc's

Together with Radboudumc, Radboud University has signed a campus license for Stata. Stata is statistical software that is in use at a number of faculties - especially at FSW and FM. The costs for the use of Stata have been relatively high up to now. Because now there is a campus license, it has become much cheaper for new users: until November 2019 it can be used free of charge on pc's owned by Radboud University. After that it will cost a maximum of € 150 per user per year, depending on the number of users.

Research data: storage and backup on C&CZ fileservers

With the lower prices for network discs and backup, several departments have started the move from locally managed discs to backupped fileservers of C&CZ. In general this has big advantages for reliability, backup and access rights that can be mananaged by the department itself. Biggest disadvantage is that network discs that have to be backed up, have to be divided in projects or other chunks of max. ca. 400 GB. Departments interested in moving their data to C&CZ fileservers should contact postmaster. The current setup is based on individual NAS-fileservers, C&CZ is investigating a new setup based on Ceph.

Departmental computers to Windows10

New departmental computers can be installed with Windows10 by C&CZ. Also existing pc's can get an upgrade from Windows7 to Windows10. You can make an appointment for this with the C&CZ helpdesk. After that, users can install software themselves with the catalogue of the Software Center. N.B.: the Outlook2016 installed with Windows10 doesn't work well with the Science IMAP mailserver. Alternatives: mailclients like Roundcube and Thunderbird or a different mailserver like the RU Exchange mail and calendar service.

More privacy in Mailman lists

In the context of the new privacy legislation the default properties of all mailman lists have been modified.

  • the mailman lists are no longer publicly announced on the mailman server.
  • the members of a list can only be viewed by the list administrators.
  • subscription to a list is restricted to addresses in ru.nl, radboudumc.nl and mpi.nl.

The third property is probably too restrictive for some of the lists, list administrators can revert this change in the privacy options (Ban list).

Webmail: Roundcube and Exchange alternative for small screens: Rainloop

For small screens of smartphones, the webmail of Roundcube is not very well suited. That is why there is an alternative now: Rainloop. You can set a "threaded view" in Rainloop, which is also handy for small screens. The Science addressbook is available in Rainloop. One can also use Rainloop for the RU Exchange mail. But Roundcube has many other advantages over Rainloop: manage folders shared with other users, shared labels and the administration of Sieve filters and out-of-office messages. Test of Ubuntu 18.04 on Linux login server lilo6

As a test of the new version of Ubuntu, 18.04 LTS, we have installed a new login server lilo6.science.ru.nl. In a few months it will replace the five year old login server lilo4. The name lilo, that always points to the newest/fastest login server, will then be moved from the two year old lilo5 to the new lilo6. The new lilo6 is a Dell PowerEdge R440 with 2 Xeon Silver 4110 CPU @2.10GHz 8-core processors and 64GB RAM. Because we enabled hyper-threading, it is showing 32 processors. For users who want to check the identity of this new server before supplying their Science-password to the new server, see the section about our loginservers. As of August 1, 2018, the service "Onderwijs in Beeld" will be terminated, the videos will no longer be accessible.

This predecessor of the RU weblectures hosted video recordings of lectures of the Faculty of Science, recorded during the academic years 2007-2015. These videos could be accessed via BlackBoard.

If you want to download your old recordings, you can do that based on the course code via the Podcast service.

Safely dispose of old hardware

At the Logistics Center of the housing department (IHZ) there is a locked room in which old hardware can be safely disposed. This is important with data carriers in order to prevent data leaks. Please do not put old hardware containing data in a container that can be searched by a passerby.

Compute clusters move to Ubuntu 16.04

C&CZ installed a new head node for the cn-cluster with Ubuntu 16.04 and a new version of SLURM. This makes it possible to upgrade all cn-clusternodes to these versions. Other clusters (coma, neuroinf, mlp) had this upgrade already. The C&CZ-managed cn compute cluster consists of 60 nodes with 1560 cores and 8 TB RAM. The Astrophysics coma cluster, with 920 cores, 600 TB fileserver storage, GPU's and fast Infiniband interconnect is a separate cluster. For more info, see the cn compute cluster page.

Old Sopho telephone exchange switched off

After more than 30 years of loyal service, the old Philips Sopho S2500 telephone exchange of the SKU (RU and Radboudumc) has been switched off and removed. This 'first digital telephone exchange' was commissioned by FNWI in August 1987, as a pilot project of PTT, Philips and the RU (then KUN). Aad Hulsbosch of C&CZ was one of the driving forces during commissioning. In 1991, the Sopho switch was expanded for the entire SKU, to approximately 15,000 connections. The telephone functionality on the SKU has recently been completely taken over by an IP telephone exchange of Mitel Mitel and the Vodafone Wireless Office wireless telephony.

Donation to free and open source software: ISC, FSF and OpenBSD

For the majority of the services C&CZ uses free software and open source software. Therefore, some time ago the idea emerged that the C&CZ employees would vote each year which projects would receive a donation of C&CZ. This year the Internet Systems Consortium, OpenBSD and the Free Software Foundation (FSF) were chosen. The Internet Systems Consortium develops a.o. BIND (DNS/nameserver) and ISC DHCP, both basic services of the network and the Internet. OpenBSD develops, next to OpenBSD itself, also OpenSSH and LibreSSL. The FSF supports GNU/Linux, which is used on almost all servers maintained by C&CZ and on many hundreds of workstations, including the computer labs.

Linux printing to Peage now simple

Initially as a test, there is now a much simpler alternative to the SMB printing from Linux. A printer "Peage" now is available on the Linux workstations and servers managed by C&CZ. The C&CZ print server translates the Science username to the U- or S-number and sends the print job onwards to a RU payprint server. Command line printing with the command lpr is also possible (lpoptions -pPeage -o SelectColor=Color to make color prints by default).

SURFdrive: now 250 GB per user

In SURF News we read that as of October 9, the storage space for users of SURFdrive has been expanded from 100 GB to 250 GB. SURFdrive is a Dropbox-like storage for work-related files, that should not have the security classification critical or sensitive. Data is stored within Dutch borders, the users remain the owners of their own data, and SURF itself provides no information to third parties, which makes SURFdrive more secure than Dropbox.
