BASS and RU password the same
On Saturday June 1st, the password for BASS (Oracle) becomes the same as for the other concern applications, i.e. to logon to BASS after June 1 the U number and RU password are used. The separate password for BASS will disappear.
At the same time the web address (URL) of BASS changes to: https://bass.ru.nl/ Those who logon to BASS directly may want to change their existing bookmark or desktop shortcut. Those who use the port forwarder to login to BASS will have to change one or more settings as well. More information about this can be found on the BASS page.

Linux login server lilo3 replaces lilo1
A new Ubuntu 12.04 Linux login server lilo3.science.ru.nl is available. Therefore the six year old login server lilo1 will be phased out soon. The name lilo, that always points to the newest/fastest login server, will also be moved from the four year old lilo2 to the new lilo3. The new lilo3 is a Dell PowerEdge R410 with 2 Xeon L5640 processors and 32 GB memory. Please remove the old entry of lilo(.science.ru.nl) from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts file. For cautious people wanting to check the fingerprint of the public RSA key before supplying their Science-password to the new server: 3e:b9:89:4d:53:9b:8f:4a:97:b2:a1:c3:0d:74:34:2c.

Ricoh and Xafax replaced by Konica Minolta
In a few weeks we will place new Konica Minolta (KM) multifunctionals (MFP's) next to the Ricoh's and some other places. After a short period, in which one can switch from Ricoh to KM, we will remove most of the Ricoh's. Until July we will have a Ricoh with Xafax-pole in a few places, so one can empty the Xafax-cards. Because the RU-wide Peage-project is still not in operation for employees, the new KM's can be used like the Ricoh's. The only difference is that the Xafax-poles will be removed because the contract with Xafax ends and cannot be continued. Copying on th KM's therefore will be only be possible after entering a code. We will contact departments about the code and about the budget/kostenplaats from which the copy costs can be reimbursed. If you do not have a code, copying can be accomplished by scanning and printing.

Voting PC's for student elections
This year too, C&CZ provided a few voting pc's in the Huygens building for the student elections for the USR, FSR and OLC. These are Ubuntu 12.04 Linux pc's, with the browser Opera in kiosk mode, which lets a user only visit the elections website, without having to log in.

A number of Science-logins has been migrated to more modern file servers. You might be affected when connecting to your home directory from a computer that's not managed by C&CZ, for example when using VPN at home. Please consult the Do-It-Yourself website for the current path of your home directory.

Wireless network around Huygens building
For some time one can use the wireless networks eduroam, ru-wlan and ru-guest (Wireless@RU) on the terrace behind the Huygens building. From now on these wireless networks are also available on every green around the Huygens building, the square at the main entrance and the square between the Huygens and Linnaeus buildings. Further info and user manuals of Wireless@RU can be found at http://www.ru.nl/uci/english/wireless_ru/wireless.

CMS functional manager Wim Janssen stationed at C&CZ
On April 15 Wim G.H.M. Janssen (IMAPP and facultary CMS functional manager) will "move in" with C&CZ. Wim will remain employed by IMAPP but will be able to perform his work more effectively from his new location at C&CZ because of our frequent collaboration. Moreover C&CZ will take over some of his tasks thus creating the possibility for new developments. There may be some confusion: for many years C&CZ also has an employee Wim P.J. Janssen, so more often a Wim-Wim-situation will arise.

Electronic cost declaration through i-Expense, also from home/Internet
Since the introduction of i-Expense, the electronic cost declaration module in BASS-Finlog - the financial computer system of our university, the number of BASS users has increased enormously. New users need to be aware whether they can access BASS directly or only through the so called Port Forwarder. Recently, access from home/Internet has been made possible if one uses VPN. More information on this can be found on the BASS page and in a previous [news article] about using BASS in combination with the RU firewall.
Logging on to BASS may be cumbersome or impossible from certain workstations because the BASS infrastructure does not support all kinds of PC-systems seamlessly. Cost declarations on paper are allowed if logging on to BASS fails for some reason, until the logon difficulties are solved. The central organisation and C&CZ work together to this end.

Booking system for scientific instruments
In a collaboration between the Science faculty and the UMCN, C&CZ has built a web application for the booking of scientific instruments of the Microscopic Imaging Centre (MIC), the Gemeenschappelijk Instrumentarium (GI) and Organic Chemistry. The web application can be found at https://bookings.science.ru.nl. Because the application was written as a generic solution, it will soon also be used for the lending system of laptops by the Library of Science. If you have a booking/reservation question which may be solved using this application, please contact C&CZ.

Safe disposal of ICT equipment and data carriers
For the disposal of ICT-equipment (PCs, laptops, servers, etc.) and data carriers (hard disks, tapes) which may contain confidential data, a safe waste channel is now available. These can be handed over to an employee of Logistics Center. So, it’s not necesarry to remove hard disks from PCs yourself.

New Functional Manager CMS
For many years everyone at FNWI who was involved in websites based on the RU Content Management System (CMS) relied on Peter Klok for help and advice. In IT terms Peter was our functional manager. Because of Peter's retirement this role was taken over by C&CZ. This means that all support questions regarding the websites of the Faculty of Science, regardless of the underlying technique, can be directed to C&CZ. In practice the support task for the CMS is in the hands of Wim G.H.M. Janssen, IT specialist at the IMAPP institute. C&CZ (especially Fred Melssen) will function as Wim's backup.

Replacement of Ricoh multifunctionals by Konica Minolta
The European tender for multifunctionals (printer/copier/scanner) for the university was won by Konica Minolta. This means that the current Ricoh machines will be replaced. There is a project to make the print/copy/scan system Péage suitable for employees. The printing and copying costs for employees will be charged to their "aanstellingskostenplaats", i.e. the current budget groups will disappear. Until this project is completed successfully, the C&CZ printbudget system will be used.
- Since the new Peage system will not support Xafax copycards, it is advised to minimize your local stock of Xafax copycards.
- The first Konica Minolta MFP's will be placed for the expansion to Huygens 2.0 (Mercator 1).
- The first replacement of Ricoh-machines in FNWI will be in April: the Peage printer Watt near the restaurant.

The latest version of Matlab, R2013a, is available for departments that have bought licenses. The software and license codes can be acquired through a mail to postmaster for those entitled to it. The software can also be found on the install-disc. The C&CZ-managed 64-bit Linux machines will soon have this version installed, an older version (/opt/matlab-R2012b/bin/matlab) is still available temporarily. The C&CZ-managed Windows machines will receive this version too.

More IP-numbers for ru-wlan and Science (wireless)
Monday, March 4th 2013 at 18:00 hours, the number of IP numbers that is available in the FNWI buildings for ru-wlan and Science was doubled, as was announced shortly before. Because ru-wlan moved to a new range, users of ru-wlan lost connectivity for at most 15 minutes. There was already a plan to replace ru-wlan and Science within the FNWI buildings by the RU-wide Eduroam and ru-wlan, but the wireless network usage had grown so fast that we could not wait for this plan to be realized. The week before, some wireless users at times could not even get an IP address, although the lease time had been brought down to 30 minutes. Therefore this temporary measure became necessary on such short notice. Because there are more IP numbers available now, more users can nowswitch from Science to ru-wlan wireless, in preparation for the realization of the plan mentioned above.

Phishing mail: "Belangrijke boodschap met betrekking tot uw Radboud Universiteit Webmail" en "Fwd: Your e-mail will expire soon"
Recently a number of employees of the Faculty of Science received a phishing email with the subject "Belangrijke boodschap met betrekking tot uw Radboud Universiteit Webmail" and content "Nieuw Belangrijk Veiligheid Bericht Alert! Inloggen om het probleem op te lossen." Others received mail with subject "Fwd: Your e-mail will expire soon". The link provided in the mail points to a copy of our Horde webmail service. Big differences are:
- the URL is not within science.ru.nl
- it is not a secure https connection, the lock is not present
- the account name and password that you type in, do not arrive at C&CZ servers, but at Internet criminals. They can then access all files and mail of that Science account. Usually the criminals try to use the user credentials to send spam via our mail servers. This is something we notice; in such a case C&CZ will disable the user account a.s.a.p. to prevent further abuse of the account and to prevent our mail servers from ending up on black lists.
It is not the first time we see a phishing attack specifically aimed at Science-users and it will most probably not be the last time either. Please stay alert! If you want to read more about phishing, please see this monthly security newsletter.

Miro printer: end of maintenance contract
Year after year some users preferred the Xerox Phaser color printer miro over the Ricoh Aficio laserprinters for its different (wax) color technique. It is not possible to have a maintenance contract in 2013 for miro. That doesn't mean that it's impossible to use miro, but it does mean that miro will be removed when a major hardware failure occurs in 2013. The plan is to have new multifunctionals all over the RU in the first half of 2013.

New TeX Live for Windows managed pc
On the S-disk texlive2012 has been installed, next to it we have added texmaker, texmaker is a LaTeX editor. To set the paths to the underlying programs in texmaker, one can use a predefined settings file. Start S:\texmaker\texmaker.exe and then choose Options menu -> Settings File -> "Replace the settings file by a new one", then select S:\texmaker\texmaker.ini and click OK. You only have to do this once if you use a roaming profile, otherwise you have to repeat this every time you login, see Dhz.

Mail problems after supplying password to phishers
Begin : 20121116 04:45 End : 20121117 ca 12:00 Affected : Users of horde webmail and users wanting to send mail to e.g. hotmail.com
Horde webmail again appeared to be misused for sending spam. This could happen because a naive user gave the Science password to phishers/spammers. After first stopping horde, early Friday morning we disabled the account of the naive user and restarted horde. Saturday morning it appeared that this short spam-outbreak had caused administrators of hotmail.com to add our mail server to their blacklist. Therefore we switched the IP-number of this mail server Saturday morning.

Phishing mail: Update Your Web Mailbox
Recently a number of employees of the Faculty of Science received a phishing email with the subject "Update Your Web Mailbox !!!" This email is supposedly sent by "Science.Ru.Nl Administrator" and tries to lure the recipients into giving away their login credentials. It is not the first time we see a phishing attack specifically aimed at Science-users and it will most probably not be the last time either. The mail contains a link to a shortened URL under http://goo.gl/ . If you fall for this and click on the link it leads you to a (now deleted) Google Docs site. If you are gullible enough to log in with your Science (or RU) credentials, then these become known to Internet criminals. This means that your account and all of your files and email are accessible by those criminals. This can go undetected for a long time until the user credentials are abused in such a way that the effects becomes visible. Usually the criminals try to use the user credentials to send spam via our mail servers, as recently happened. This is something we notice; in such a case C&CZ will disable the user account a.s.a.p. to prevent further abuse of the account and to prevent our mail servers from ending up on black lists.

End of life of transparency printer nicolas
Year after year the inkjet transparency printer nicolas was used to produce good-looking color transparencies. Because the printer shows a hardware problem and is used only very seldom, we decided to remove the printer. If one still needs to print transparancies, one can use *laserprinter compatible* transparancies in the laserprinters.

As of October 2012, the Faculty of Science will have a pool of 64 laptops that can be borrowed by employees and students of this Faculty. There are 64 standard-RU laptops (HP Probook 6560b). The laptops can be reserved and borrowed at the Library of Science. Reservations for Faculty education purposes have precedence, especially for the groups that contributed financially to the pool: PUC of Science and the Chemistry Lab. It is also possible to borrow complete laptop trolleys containing around 21 laptops. There are lending regulations. Individuals who borrow a laptop need to sign a lending agreement. There is also a page with user information. The laptops can be used anywhere in the faculty, e.g. on the mezzanine; a study landscape without desktop pc's that will be opened soon.

Old pc clearance
Update, September 27: All PCs have gone. Next year there will probably be a PC clearance again.
From September 24, old PCs can be obtained from C&CZ. These PCs have served about 5 years in the computer labs and were replaced last summer. All hard drives have been removed. Employees and students of the Faculty of Science interested in obtaining one of these PCs can make an appointment by mailing the C&CZ helpdesk.

New printer 'toorop' near central mezzanine
A new b/w laser printer 'toorop', an HP LaserJet 9050 PCL 6, has been installed near HG01.038, between the two central stairs on the first floor of the Huygens building. Soon the mezzanine next to it will be opened, a study landscape without desktop pc's, suited for laptop usage. There are more than 60 network and power outlets. The network outlets will be opened up when the test with 802.1x network authentication has been done. Until then, only the wireless network can be used. Two new wireless-N access points ought to give enough connectivity.

Mobile telephony in and around the Huygens building
Mobile enterprise telephony with Vodafone Wireless Office (VWO) is offered as a service as of today. The indoor coverage of the Vodafone mobile network in all of the Huygens building is good enough to go forward with VWO. There are plans to improve the coverage in the cellars and the buildings around the Huygens building (Logistiek Centrum, NMR, HFML, FEL and Nanolab). The earlier expected connection of KPN and T-mobile to the Distributed Antenna System that was installed for this, is still uncertain. Our telephony page contains all info about VWO (mobile calling and being reachable with RI-internal 5-digit numbers, also outside of the campus. You can also find info about IP-telephony there. IP-telephony (desktop) and VWO (cell-phone) are the future of RU-telephony.

Eduroam incoming working again
The UCI network administrators told us that in the month April Eduroam-incoming from a different Eduroam institution did not work. Authenticating to Eduroam, as explained on our wireless network page, is possible with U-number and with Science loginname.

Never ignore a certificate warning!
If a program complains about an incorrect certificate of e.g. a website, then never ignore this, but report this to C&CZ a.s.a.p.. The reason to give this warning is a recent complaint of a browser, that pointed to a contaminated laptop, that launched an ARP spoofing attack. The idea behind such an attack is to listen to network traffic in order to e.g. obtain passwords.

Recommendations after nu.nl hack
The popular Dutch news website NU.nl has been compromised and altered to serve a malicious worm to those who visited it on March 14, 2012 between 11:30 and 12:30. PC's with older versions of Adobe Reader and Java may have been infected with the Sinowal worm, that is designed to steal passwords, online banking information and other sensitive data. We heard reports that up-to-date installations of F-Secure Client Security blocked this malware. According to ComputerIdee only a few security software suites recognized this malware. The version of Hitmanpro mentioned there has been copied to the Install network share, for employees and students who want to scan their PC.
General recommendations to limit risks:
- Always update all software, especially browsers, mail clients and software used to show content from the Internet: Java, PDF-readers (Adobe, ...), Office suites, Flash, ...
- Never trust a compromised system again: Clean the Master Boot Record, e.g. with TDSSkiller by Kaspersky and do a fresh install of the OS, with all updates available.

Please use ru-wlan instead of Science wireless!
In the near future the wireless access points in the Huygens building and the buildings around it, will be replaced by new ones, based on a new technique. The Science wireless network will then no longer be available. Therefore please switch over to using the ru-wlan wireless network, that is available before and after. One can use ru-wlan with U-number and RU-password, but also with and Science-password. After the switch, faster (wireless-N) access points wille be used in busy areas. After the switch the eduroam wireless network will be available too, one can use that with and RU-password, but also with and Science-password. Before the switch, eduroam is only available near the Huygens building on the terrace behind the restaurant. In the future ru-wlan will be switched off, only eduroam will survive. Furthermore, there is a plan to have more wireless access outside of the Huygens building, i.e. at the central entrance and the grass behind the Huygens building.

Network problems after change of January 28 solved
January 28, the UCI network management installed new software and a new configuration on the Science Faculty router, among other things to prepare for IP telephony. The following week some network problems were reported, which have been traced to a high cpu load of the router. After a few temporary measures were taken, on Monday January 28 18:00-18:45 a new configuration was installed, after which the cpu load hasn't been high again and the network problems appear to have been solved more permanently.

Faculty Education Award 2011
The Faculty of Science Education Award 2011 was awarded to C&CZ, for its "long and excellent service record with regards to the provision of support to students and teachers", according to the unanimous jury. The dean, who presented the award, mentioned several developments in the IT infrastructure and the teaching support systems and the close cooperation with staff and students, which makes that products are developed that are needed. Since 2001, the Faculty Education Award is awarded by representatives from the Faculty Student Council and both student and staff faculty degree programme committees. The jury is chaired by the Vice-Dean for Education. The award consists of a certificate and a work of art by Anneke van Bergen. C&CZ is very honoured by this splendid award.

Change ru-wlan, Dec 19 23:00-24:00 hours
The UCI let us know that the ru-wlan wireless network will have a service window on december 19 between 23:00 and 24:00 hours. In this service window the number of IP addresses is enlarged from 2000 to 4000 and the authentication gets quickened and for iPhones improved. After this service window it is no longer necessary to use profiles for iPads and iPhones. During this service window use of ru-wlan will not be possible.

Split-view DNS could influence Internet at home
Anyone using at home a science.ru.nl nameserver like ns1.science.ru.nl, should remove these DNS-servers from the list of DNS-servers, because we started using split-view DNS. With split-view DNS, we can give internal (RU on campus) pc's answers differing from those given to external pc's. The UCI introduced this a few months ago for e.g. the DNS zones ru.nl and heyendaal.net to increase IT security.

Never react to an e-mail that asks for your password!
A few days ago one of our users replied to an e-mail that apparently was sent by "support" and asked for username and password. This account was later misused to send hundred thousands spam-mails through our mail server. This resulted in the blacklisting of our outgoing mail server in e.g. the blacklists of Windows Live Hotmail. The fastest way to remedy this is to give our outgoing mail server a different IP-address, which we did this morning. Lesson: Never reply to an e-mail that asks for your username and password! It causes a lot of trouble for us and other users.

Milestone Linux Compute Cluster: 512 CPU-cores and 1024 GPU/CUDA-cores
Early 2006 a faculty Linux compute cluster was started by the purchase of 4-core rackmountable servers by several departments. The latest additions to the cluster, a machine with 48 CPU-cores and a machine with 12 CPU-cores and 1024 CUDA GPU-cores in 2 NVIDIA Tesla M2090 cards, brought the size of the cluster to these milestone figures. Source code has to be rewritten to make use of CUDA-cores. The latest version of Matlab has support for the use of CUDA-cores. For workstations and servers, including these compute servers, Fedora Linux is gradually being replaced by Ubuntu LTS Linux.

BASS and single logon
For security reasons direct access to the concern application BASS used to be blocked, even from within the RU internal network; one had to logon to the Port Forwarder first which meant two logons in a row. With the RU central firewall in place the first logon is not necessary anymore (although still possible) for PC's which are located behind the firewall from a network topology point of view. A significant amount of the PC's in FNWI have already been relocated behind the firewall. On the BASS page under System Configuration you can see the current status of your PC and how to configure your PC to be able to switch to single logon.

Mobile telephony: coverage and future
The coverage of the Vodafone mobile network in the Huygens building has been improved considerably, it should be good in the whole building now. We plan to connect the mobile networks of KPN and T-Mobile to the newly installed Distributed Antenna System as well. The improved coverage is a necessary step to use Vodafone Wireless Office, which allows phone calls to and from cell phones using the RU-internal five-digit numbers. The future of enterprise telephony for Radboud University consists of Voice over IP for desktop phones and Wireless Office for cell phones.

Versioning of text and source code: Subversion hosting
Are you developing software? Do you write code? You've probably created some zip files of working versions to fall back to. Sounds familiar? You can now use the Subversion service of C&CZ. Subversion supports you with versioning of source code files. Using Subversion, progress becomes visible and there's always an 'undo button'. Ultimately, it's a nice way to manage any kind of collaborative work where multiple individuals are editing the same files. The Subversion service is available for people with a Science account. Repository access is also possible for people from outside the faculty.

Reference Manager license terminated end 2011
Many years the UMCN has had a license for the use of Reference Manager within RU and UMCN. Some employees within the Faculty of Science used this, instead of the RU standard EndNote. At the end of 2011, the UMCN terminates the license for Reference Manager, it has switched to EndNote. More information about the switch to EndNote can be found on the University Library website.

Kun.nl mail-addresses removed
All users with a @*.kun.nl email address, which almost always is used only to forward the mail to a @*.ru.nl address, received almost two months ago an email that these addresses would be removed today. Today all @*.kun.nl have been removed, with a temporary exception for departments that have not been able to get externally registered addresses changed. This removal of @*.kun.nl email addresses has been coordinated between the administrators of email servers at Radboud University.
