Lending laptop pool
NB: wirelessly using the laptops with Linux is broken on Ubuntu 14.04, wired it works. Unfortunately we haven't found the time to fix this.
[/nl] The Faculty of Science has a pool of 69 laptops that can be lent by employees and students of the Faculty. These are laptops. They are almost identical in use to the pc's in the computer labs. The main difference is that when using the laptops wirelessly with Windows7, a second login screen appears, in order to login to the wireless network. Furthermore reservation is not through IHZ.
The reservation of the laptops is administered by the Library of Science. N.B.: Friday afternoon, all laptops are reserved for NLT. The reason behind this is that 38 of the laptops have been bought with money of the schools that participate in NLT. The Faculty of Science may use these laptops 9 out of 10 dayparts each week. In exchange for that FNWI allows use by NLT of the laptops that FNWI financed during 1 daypart each week. Next to this use by NLT, use for FNWI education has preference, especially for the groups that helped finance the laptop pool.
How to log in?
You can log on to the laptops with:
- either with the local user name .\gast and password Guest. When one uses this local user name, there are no connections to servers or wireless networks. Locally installed software can be used. It is also possible to manually connect with a wired or wireless network.
- or with a Science loginname and the corresponding password. When using Windows7 wireless, a second login screen appears in order to login to the wireless network at the same time as (or to be more precise even before) logging in to the laptop. At this moment this is the Eduroam.

To login with RU account instead of Science account, use the four requested data:
Upper window (log in to Windows AD): RU\s123456 RU password Lower window (log in to the network): RU password
What environment is offered?
The laptops are all dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04, just like the PC's in the terminal rooms.
The borrower promises by signing the laptop lending agreement to agree with the lending regulations of the Faculty of Science for lending laptops to students and employees.
Lending procedure for a trolley
For Faculty education (NLT, Chemistry Lab, Math Tournament, ...) a complete trolley with maximum 22 laptops can be lent. The trolley has been modified by C&CZ in such a way, that the laptops are connected by UTP-cable to the network, in order to have automatic updates working.
Use for examinations without Internet
The wireless network of the laptops can be disabled by the the C&CZ helpdesk. This can be used for examinations: allow students the use of a computer without giving them easy access to the internet. This has been done already on two clearly labeled laptops (hglaptop63/hglaptop64) on request of the Education Center in order to assist feature limited students with examinations. For larger examinations, please reserve in time, specifying the need for laptops with wireless networking disabled. Of course surveillance is still needed to prevent Internet access by attaching a USB-dongle.
