Paperless meetings with Android tablets

The reason for writing this page is that the FGV will try paperless meetings starting September 1, 2015. We discuss therefore below especially the topics that are of interest for thar target: the choice of an Android tablet, the wireless network Eduroam, Science VPN, connecting to a network and apps for annotating PDF files and for synchronizing the annotated files to a backed-up disk.

Choosing an Android tablet

As of May 2015 a good choice seems to be: HTC Nexus9 white 16GB, with /shared/desktop/accessories/nexus-9/nexus-9-magic-case-mint.jpg magic case or possibly a keyboard folio. If you already have an Android tablet, you can of course use that. If you want a mini tablet, the 7" Nexus 7 (2013) with a Poetic case might be a good choice. The advantage of the Nexus types: Always the latest version Android software, rapid updates and no manufacturer's own software.

Network

Wi-Fi Eduroam

The Eduroam wireless network is available in all campus buildings. It is also available in other universities, see Eduroam.nl.

Browse to http://www.ru.nl/wireless for all info and configuration manuals.

When asked for username and password, this can be one of the following combinations:

choice 1		RU-password (as is used for Radboudnet)
choice 2	sciencelogin@science.ru.nl	Science-password (as is used on the Do-It-Yourself site

You can check the IP address by visiting www.whatsmyip.org it will show:

IP address: an address in the range 145.116.128.0 - 145.116.191.255

VPN

To be allowed to access network disks, it is usually sufficient to be connected to the RU campus network, wired or wireless via Eduroam. Extra secured network drives, which can be accessed only from certain workstations, can often be accessed from the Science VPN.
